Every Christmas, Winco has standing rib roast for under $5. Right now
I can't get there unless my husband takes me. When I went in for an
annual medical visit, the receptionist pointed out that my driver's
license had expired last year ( I thought it expired 2016) grrrr. . .
I got all primped up earlier this week to get my driver's license
renewed. Found the DMV location for driver's license (they changed
locations) go inside and the computer system was down and I was told
to come back another time.
I hope Winco saves some roasts for me. Everyone knows about the sale
and the sizes get picked over. I don't want a huge roast.

That must have been infuriating How often do you have to renew??

That is new to me. I got my licence when I was a teenager and only had to
renew it when my name changed.

In California, it's every 5 years. Before 60, you can do it by mail
for 1 or 2 renewals, until they want you to get a new picture.

Senior ID is good for 10 years.

I suppose it varies from state to state. I'm not a "senior" by most US
government standards. Yet my South Carolina drivers license (issued in
2010) doesn't expire until 2020.

And yes, they want you to get a new picture. When I lived in Tennessee
I could renew online... but at some point they definitely would have
said nope, you need to come in. Unless you're dead, your appearance
tends to change as you get older.

In MD it's now good for 7 years. It just changed recently I guess. We
can also do it by mail but I have to remember to take the eye doctor
portion to be filled out because I have to wear glasses to drive, bad
distance vision.

Wow, some of you guys live in great places for DLs....in Iowa, after the age of 72,
we have to show up for the eye test every two years. One would think a RX type
note from an ophthalmologist would suffice, but no, doesn't work like that. Dammit.
It is really annoying.

Gosh I must be eh? LOL I can assure you we have never renewed ours every 10
year so we must be very special.

Especially for the expert on UK law .... Squertz!!

"Though the photocard needs to be renewed every 10 years, in general,
driving licences are valid until you're 70, after which it needs renewing
every three years. If you only need to update your address or name, or
you're over 70 and you're just renewing it, this is free."

I didn't even get a photocard until after I had cataract surgery and himself
not until his paper licence was falling to piece, which was relatively
recently.

When mine ran out last year, I went to renew but as I live in Canada,
they wouldn't allow it.

Bummer You will have been driving here on it all these years though eh?
Could you not have given a UK address? Did you still have the paper licence?

All UK driver licenses expire automatically when the holder reaches
age 70.
After that it has to be renewed again, every three years.

Thanks. Do you have to provide a new photo each time?

We do - I get a letter telling me it's up for renewal in a couple of
months and I simply go in, stand by the counter, camera behind the
clerk takes the pic. Go back to my seat and a few minutes later there
it is, laminated, etc.

It's the most useful piece of ID here (mainly because of the photo)
has one's address and also a box which is checked if you wish to be an
organ donor in the event.

That is part of the renewal process. You take an eye test, get your
picture taken and off you go. Under certain circumstances you might
have to take a written test or a driven test. (Moving to another state
for instance) I remember taking my driving portion of the test in
Minnesota in a blizzard. Snow was piled high by the plows and the
course was indicated by orange flags posted on tops of mountains of
snow. I passed.

Beef prices haven't dropped much here for the holidays, at least yet.

Von's has 'ribeye roast', bone in, for $5.88 a pound.

Ralph's, $6.77.

Smart & Final, $5.69.

In the recent past, it would have been under $5,
and even a bit under $4 if I was lucky.

At that price ($5.00/lb) if I were you I'd call and ask if they could
reserve a couple of small ones for you. It's not as if they couldn't
sell them anyway, if, for some reason, your husband wasn't able to take
you to Winco.

Those prices seem so incredibly low, they make me wonder what's up.
Maybe they're just running them as loss leaders.

I haven't seen rib roasts at $5/lb for 20 years.... actually beef
prices are rather low all of a sudden so USDA Choice rib roasts are at
about $8/lb. Of course the dwarf will be right along claiming rib
roasts are $4/lb, but we all know he eats from his food bank so he
pays ZERO for most groceries... he'll likely be dining on glommed Chef
Boyardee for the holidays, ALONE! The dwarf doesn't even have pet, no
pet would want to live with the dwarf... maybe a Texass scorpion

As far as I can tell, Safeway isn't selling them at give away prices
this year. Bone in was $5.99 lb a couple of weeks ago - this week,
it's regular price. So, we paid $15 lb at Costco for (prime, not
choice) bone-in Prime Rib today.

That's terrible! Some of the best meat is on the bones.

They way that I enjoy the bones from a rib roast might appropriately be
described as Frenching.

You should have said something . . . I would have photographed the
label for you Winco doesn't advertise at all. I think their
annual Christmas rib roast prices are a loss leader against the other
local stores. Regular shoppers at Winco know about the annual roast
deal. It keeps us from wandering too far away from Winco to seek out
other deals and spending the bulk of our money elsewhere.

Hey Janet! I'm usually the one that trumpets Winco Christmas standing
rib roast prices here, but I'm starting to fade. Here's a "select or
higher" label standing rib roast that I bought Monday and have just
salted and scored. Luckily, the label is visible, since I just split
the package open to salt and score the meat. I rewrapped tonight with
some cling wrap. I could have had prime for two bucks a pound more.
The label is barely visible and I'm hoping that people can read it.

I saw the salting the fat cap bit on "Cook's Country" last week and
thought I'd try it.
Go Winco!

Do they have the 38 cents per pound oranges where you are? The
oranges are fabulous, big, firm, sweet. They have a couple of
billboards here that are advertising the oranges. They are a real
bargain.

I never before saw beef labeled "Select Or Higher", doesn't say what
organization graded it. . . I'd call that Not Graded. I don't salt
beef until after it's cooked, with salt in all those slits down into
the flesh the salt will suck that beef dry, even while sitting in the
fridge. I'd rinse off the salt, dry it well with paper towels, rub it
with olive oil and a good amount of coarse ground black pepper. Even
when a fresh ham is scored you need to be careful to only score the
fat, not into the flesh. You might want to baste that roast with
olive oil while it cooks.
