Default What is the olive oil situation like?

My favorite Middle Eastern store -- usually the home of EVOO bargains -- has
no Italian olive oil at all. I figure this is another harvest, so the oil
should be flowing. Does anybody have a handle on the situation?

Should we just buy whatever Costco has for now?

I couldn't say. I prefer Greek olive oil. The owner of a local
restaurant allegedly has a cousin with an olive ranch I buy
olive oil at the restaurant, currently $12 for 750 ml. Perhaps
not a bargain, but it's a price I'm willing to pay for an olive
oil that I like.

Let's talk about Christmas in CHINA, John. I hear they make good
chocolate covered cherries for only $2.00 per dozen there. Hopefully
Walmart will sell them this holiday season.

want to be an economic traitor to the United States. I choose to spend
MY $$ more wisely! And when your grandchildren can't get jobs, you

Sure they do! At least that's what the LABEL says!!

I wonder what else they have in them that the label DOESN'T say!!
After all, China has no FDA, or USDA, etc. All they want to do is make
more MONEY!

You *do* know what melamine is, right?

Plenty. I certainly wont (knowingly) eat anything with even a single
ingredient from China.

And here I was thinking it was all done for the love of humanity.

I don't remember the exact amount now. I think it was $12-14,
2L Kirkland brand.

That's different than what I buy. I get the one liter for about $9.
I like it.

That's cheap. We have a store in town that has good oils, but the price
is very high.
http://nomahome.com/balsamicsglazesoils.aspx?page=2

A two liter bottle like you bought would be $117.

You're talking about the glass bottle? I buy that one too, but not
this time. Not sure if they even had anything other than the garlic
flavor, but I was going specifically for the big bottle. Their EVOO
selections have been quite "varied" for the last year due to all the
problems in oliveland.

I'm on a Chosen Foods oil kick now. Finding it at Grocery Outlet for
slightly less than $10. Chosen Blend: high oleic organic safflower
oil & a blend of avocado & coconut oil. I haven't given up on TJ's
sunflower seed oil either.

Yikes! That should be used as dipping oil in a fancy restaurant, IMO.

I held my breath when I paid $17 for a L of fancy (award winning, they
claimed) Greek oil a few years ago and it wasn't even the most
expensive one in the shop.

Just ran across this conversion chart on the theoliveoilgrove.com, it
might be of interest to someone

Butter = Olive Oil conversion

1 tsp. = 3/4 tsp.
1 tbsp. = 2 1/4 tsp.
2 tbsp. = 1 1/2 tbsp.
1/4 cup = 3 tbsp.
1/3 cup = 1/4 cup
1/2 cup = 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp.
2/3 cup = 1/2 cup
3/4 cup = 1/2 cup + 1 tbsp.
1 cup = 3/4 cup

Wow. Haven't heard about those places in yrs. I grew up in Rancho
Cordova, back when it was a new lily white suburb of Sacto. New

It seems quite international now. I've noticed quite a few Korean
restaurants and other Asian businesses along Folsom. And down Sunrise
there is a large concentration of auto dismantlers. Mather Air Base is
now commercial. Aerojet was involved in a couple of mergers but is stll
a presence in RC. Were they still growing hops in the area when you were
there?

Yep.

Worked on a hop ranch (farm) fer 3 summers during high school (RCHS).
This was not near Watt, where all hop farms were long gone by the 60s,
but way out on Sloughhouse Rd. Last time I looked, about 10 yrs ago,
Sloughhouse Rd was all "ranchettes" caternig to the wannabe horsey
set. Most hops are now grown in OR and WA.
