Starkist Tuna - 5oz cans, packed in water (or oil)

My store this week....3 cans for a dollar, limit 12.
I finally got there on the first day of a good sale so they had
plenty. Next time I go on Saturday morning, I'll bet the shelves are
empty.

I do eat tuna sandwiches maybe once or twice a week (as late night
snacks). I'll buy many more this week just for future use...this is a
rare price for canned tuna these days. :-D

I think the recommendation now is to eat tuna no more than once a week
because of the high mercury levels.

Y'know, about a year ago I found a similar "bargain". I've been
eating canned tuna my whole life, like most Americans, but there's
been a lot of question recently about how often those tuna cans even
contain tuna. I ate one, and the second, and the third is still
unopenned in my pantry. It was pretty poor quality tuna, if it was
tuna at all. I'd offer it to a cat if I had one handy, for a second
opinion. At this point if I'm going to eat canned tuna it's going to
be the best stuff available, and frankly it's fallen off my list.

There are a couple of restaurants that claim they're using exotic
"Spanish canned tuna" or the like, ... I'm even avoiding those staples
of American cuisine the tuna salad sandwich and tuna casserole. Not
just the mercury, but the doubt of what I'm getting, some of the
substitute fishes have reputations for intestinal upset.

Salmon just seems a better alternative, there's much less doubt about
what you're getting, and the canned pink salmon at TJ's, with similar
products available in most markets, at about $3.30/pound, is fine for
me when I want canned fish.

I don't even know what Fancy Feast smells like, and I won't, because I
made the mistake of buying Friskies cans when they were on sale, and after
that my cat turns up her nose at the cheaper 9 Lives.

Canned fish is sold in many quality levels. I can't imagine three 5
oz cans of tuna for a buck is going to be solid white tuna, it's
likely that awful dark flake tuna, scraps left from the solid white
tinned tuna... my cats won't eat that chum. There are also several
species of tuna, same as with salmon. One usually gets what they pay
for. The other issue to keep in mind is that tuna has a rather high
murcury content so one would be wise to limit their tuna consumption
whether canned or fresh. Cats are very discerning about what they'll
eat, they won't eat canned fish if it's tainted with heavy metals, in
fact most feral cats won't eat commercial cat food unless they have no
other choice, they prefer to eat their own kills. Believe it or not
one of the canned foods most cats can't resist, and I use it in the
Have-A-Hart trap, is SPAM... they actually prefer it to expensive
sardines. I still have two more ferals to trap... Joiner and Ivan are
very elusive/wary... the rest have all been to the Vet. I'm pretty
sure Ivan is a boy, but Joiner looks prego and needs to go to the Vet.
Joiner is not a litter mate but joined the kittens, she's probably a
few months older and took over the mommy training chores, she's an
excellent hunter, this is the first spring I've seen no vole mounds,
they earn their keep. This is an ideal spring day (sunny and 74º),
tomorrow will be the first mowing. My Redspire Pear in full bloom

A play on Kuthe's narcissist thing that doesn't quite work because Cesar is
dog food. The cat version of super premium Mars canned is called Sheba. No
way she's ever tasting that. I do let her have a little Purina Beyond grain
free every day, but not too much because there is still too much carb in that
stuff.

Daughter will not eat tuna now because of this. I don't even have any more
canned. I do have some in a pouch. But after seeing this it has made me
not want to eat it. Well that and the guy who was cooked to death at the
tuna plant.

I sometimes donate canned tuna to the food bank but we don't eat it.

I tried feeding one of my cats Sheba once when I had a coupon for it. Would
not eat. More recently I tried feeding my cats Friskies. That wound up
with me having to make a visit to the vet. I will spare you the details.
But now I don't know what to do with the rest of it. To be fair, there is
cheese in what I bought. I suspect that it is more the cheese that is the
problem and less the brand.

Their main food brand is Royal Canin but they only like the dry. Not the
wet. Also they get the Fancy Feast Broths twice a day but there is precious
little food in those pouches. It's supposed to be considered a treat. But
I can tell that it is really helping them. Jazzy has really soft fur now.
She didn't before.

Friskies in 13 oz cans is a far better quality product than it is in
those 5.5 oz cans and ends up costing about half as much, just not as
many flavors in the larger cans. Not all stores carry the larger
cans, I get it at BJs, by the 12 can case, costs like 70¢ a can... the
5.5 ounce cans are about 45¢ in cases of 48. Walmart carries it too.
When I see it I stock up as it sells out fast.

It's just a very rare sale this week. Probably a "loss leader" to get
people in to buy other things while they are there.

I will stock up on it as I usually keep a couple of cans handy and
this is as cheap as it gets.
