You've (roughly) described why the "banter" groups act as portals to
usenet. They use usenet groups as "rentacrowd" to attract paying
advertisers to the banter websites.

If I am reading this right, you are suggesting that they are legitimate
posters being directed here. I find that hard to believe because almost
every one of them uses that same format, introducing themselves as new
to, interested in cooking and looking forward to participating in our forum.

just as they find usenet groups)

That's how its members are told to introduce themselves. Unfortunately
they rarely find the thread again to pick up any replies. Membership is
free. The website earns income from advertising.Presumably usenet posts
count as websitepage hits so the advertisers think their advert is seen
by thousands.

I have no problem with people posting answers to a question like
"Whatever happened to?" If somebody is curious enough in the future
to google "Franco Palumbo," the answer will turn up next to the question.
