I also heard that all of the Safeway's and Albertsons in this area will soon
be Haggen. I am not sure how I feel about this. I grew up with a Haggen
within walking distance of my house. So my mom would have me walk up there
on occasion for things like a tomato, celery, a pound of hamburger or
perhaps just to get out of her hair for a while. They were fine for things
like that but not where we normally did all of our shopping.

My dad preferred another Haggen that was a few miles away because they had
this odd little clothing section and also an expanded garden shop. I had
considered applying to be the garden shop manager but decided against it
after learning the parameters of the job. I would have to drive back and
forth between the two stores to make sure all of the plants were kept
watered. That wouldn't even be an issue for me now but at the time I had a
1970 Ford Maverick that liked to break down on me at least once a week.

The clothing that they sold in those days was quite nice. Boutique type
stuff. May not have even been owned by Haggen. Not sure. I think they
even had shoes for a time and perhaps some gift items. My mom seemed to be
partial to it so it was great for when my dad had to buy her a gift. But
that was then and this is now.

The Top Foods (owned by the same company who owns Haggen) went out in this
area but the one in Woodinville has already been converted to a Haggen. I
went in there one day when I had some time on my hands and only needed to
buy a couple of food items that Target didn't have. Overall I was shocked
at the high prices! They took out some things, like the salad bar and tried
to make it very upscale looking, although I'm not sure how upscale the
products really are. They had what appeared to be a nice selection of
cheeses but I needed no cheese that day so didn't do much other than glance.

I did need some candy as I had low blood sugar while in there. They had
what appeared to be an extensive selection of bulk candies until I began
actually looking at the wares. Nope. Really crappy, cheap candy, some of
it displayed in several different places. Such as one kind of red colored
candy in 4 different spots. No brand name listed for most of the stuff and
it was all a "may contain traces of...". So I wound up not buying any. I
can't remember now what I did buy but not even all of what was on my short
list and I carried one thing out in each hand. No bag. I can't remember
what the item was now, but some sort of prepared, refrigerated thing that
sells for around $3 at Winco and they wanted $7something for it. No thanks.

Does anyone have a Haggen in their area? The person who gave me the news
about this said that she read an article and overall they are purported to
have good prices on standard things like eggs and milk. And I know that
their brand has good prices. I haven't tried much of it. I think I have
bought canned vegetables and they were fine.

This link indicates that Haggen is cheaper for some things. This must be
what the person read and mentioned to me because these are the items she
mentioned. Of all of those, the only thing I might buy would be stewed
tomatoes and I sure as heck would never pay that price for them! I might
buy them at a sale price somewhere but more likely I will go to Big Lots or
Winco for those.

This is going to suck royally here because the most common grocery stores
here are Safeway and Albertons. We also have QFC but their prices are so
high that I pretty much only go there now for sale items or when they send
me coupons for free things. The store by my parent's old house that used to
be Haggen has been a QFC for years so I did shop there pretty much weekly
only because it was so close to their house but the most I ever purchased
was two bags and they were not even full. I stuck to buying single serve
drinks, sale items and things that I absolutely had to have for the next
night or two's meals.

I did try the fairly new Walmart Superstore earlier. It's in Everett and it
used to be a Top Foods. It seems very small for a Superstore. I only went
into the grocery section and only bought one item. They were out of it at
the Walmart grocery store. I didn't go there first because when I used
Mapquest, it indicated that it is about 3 miles further away but I think it
was trying to force me onto the freeway which would be very stupid. Much
quicker and easier to go the back roads and it really isn't that much
farther away than Winco. That also leaves me the option of Target, Costco
and many other grocery stores on the way home if I can't find what I need
there. So I am going to change my shopping path. There is also a TJ's
(have not been to that location), Grocery Outlet and a Dollar Tree within a
few blocks of that Walmart. And one of my friends lives along that route so
that's a bonus too. She recently gave her car to her son so she is without
transportation sometimes.

Nothing unpleasant happened at the Walmart. I didn't have to wait in line.
And the clerk came chasing out to the guy walking ahead of me. He had left
something in the store. Either a wallet or a cell phone. I couldn't tell
for sure what it was. So I guess unless something changes, this will now be
my first stop for groceries.

We also have Fred Meyer here but I find that for groceries, they too are
high. They are owned by Kroger. I liked to go there when Angela was
younger because they have nice children's clothing. Somewhat high priced
but good sale prices. And they have a nice garden section. And if I needed
a book, school supplies, a pair of New Balance shoes in a wide width or
something like nail polish, a radio or telephone, I could get it there. So
they are useful but overall I still prefer Target. Not quite the same type
of store but close.

And then we have PCC, Whole Foods and Central Market, all of which are
similar. PCC might be a bit smaller and Central does give the option of
main stream things like Coke products, although it would appear with their
remodel they are focusing more on the organic stuff, perhaps because that's
what people go there for.

I've never heard of it, but it sounds dreadful. By your description
it will be an all in one store, similar to a Super Target. I would
definitely change my shopping habits if that happened here.
