Cashed means exchanged for cash.

Deposited mean credited to payee's bank account

Cleared means funds removed from maker's account

or does nothing have any meaning anymore?

Technically your are correct, but ask 100 people what happened to the
check sent to the phone company. Many (most?) will say they cashed it.
Maybe it is a regional thing but I've heard that for years.

I've even heard when asked if a check cleared, "yep, they cashed it".

There are hundreds of mis-uses like that. How many people call a boiler
a furnace or a water heater a hot water heater? What flavor Coke are you
drinking, orange?

Absolutely. If I wonder Did they cash the check yet, I'm not
thinking did they get 20s or 50s, I mean have they presented it
for processing.

It goes without saying that someone at a utility is not going to the
bank with it to get actual cash. If they are, it will come to light
soon enough as they'd be embezzling.

next thing you'll tell us is that when a recipe says teaspoon, you think
tablespoon.

? I don't see that happening. Any more than I see some business
actually taking my payment check to the bank for coins and bills.

Works for me, I've heard that used, too.

Not that it's even mentioned much at all, I write very few
checks and the only payee that ever dragged their feet cashing ...
oops, depositing ... payments was my town, property taxes.

I looked it up and you are correct in what you said. To cash it means to
either get cash or deposit it.

Again, correct.

Well that could be if it was one of those increasingly popular Coke
flavoring machines.
