I'll stick with "hack", even if only cuz it's less typing than
"modification". ;)

The one new term that really annoys me is "maker", like all those
inventors or tinkerers that have pushed science, technology, read
civilization, forward since the dawn of man weren't really making
anything. As if!

(sigh)

It's jes the next younger generation trying out their wings. Gotta
try new dress styles, behavior, vocabulary, etc. Whatever it takes to
divorce themselves from the generation that raised them.

De-com 'couture' while yer at it.

I wonder if anyone has done the math on using these substitutes? Still nowhere near to making a simple cup of coffee via old methods, I'll bet.

I'm certainly no expert but it seems to me other companies are selling
what they call 'k' cups for those brewers. Maxwell house comes to mind.

I wouldn't waste my money on a Keurig. Back when I drank coffee I

I stopped drinking coffee years ago but even when I did drink it I
didn't like "instant" coffee. That's all this really is. I worked in
an office that had a larger version of this machine. I don't remember
the mfg but this was well before a home version was available. It was
an amusing gadget but most people who actually *liked* coffee preferred
to wait for a real pot to brew. :)

How does the type of brewing pot raise LDL?

I've been using French press for years. I just like the variability of brewing time and amount of coffee used. I even made little quilted cozies to keep em hot while I wait my ten minutes before pouring.

I only make 2 10 oz mugs of french press coffee, I pour them both and cover 1 with a piece of styofoam to keep it hot. I use a Thermos-Nissan insulated stainless pot but still pour both mugs out at the same time.

If you are in a position to know your LDL level you should know that LDL
is bad cholesterol, so you don't want it to be high. It is the HDL that
you want to be higher.

I have different types. I usually start the day with a latte. In the
evening we have coffee from a drip machine or from a French press. I go
to the corner bakery for a coffee every day and have their coffee of the
day, always a fair trade coffee and made in a commercial drip machine.
IMO, it is the best coffee around.

I was planning of getting a Keurig for the office from Costco. I'll have
to make sure the one I get is not a DRM model. Costco is the best place
to get a Keurig but I'm not getting how they can sell third party K-cups
AND the 2.0 model. My guess is that Costco is gonna get a bunch of
returns on the coffee maker.

As I recall, Macy's was selling these things at a serious discount a few

It is not instant coffee. In fact, the Keureg works very similarly to a
French press in that the water is heated and then forced through the
little cup of *ground* coffee. With a French press, you put the hot
water in and forced through the ground coffee.

I don't drink coffee any more either. When I did drink it, I liked the
cheaper, weak stuff. Didn't matter to me if it was brewed or the stuff in
the tea bag. That to me was better than instant. But instant would do in a
pinch. I wasn't drinking coffee because I enjoyed it. I was drinking it
only for the caffeine.

He means that the default coffee brewing method is dripping through a
paper filter, which lowers the amount of cafestol and kahweol that finds
its way into your mug. The French press merely holds the grounds back with
a wire mesh, and lets these compounds through.

Heated water forced through coffee grounds sounds more like expresso, although the water isn't superheated. What I like about the machine is that when the brewing is over, the pump depressurizes the K-cup which results in no post-brew dripping. The bad part is that it will randomly brew a short cup sometimes. The important part is that it brews a great cup of coffee - every single time.

It is a method of measuring LDL and I don't have a clue of which method the lab uses (Friedewald vs. Iranian) as I've never asked them and not particularly interested in grilling them on their method.

This is incorrect. In a French press, water is poured over and stirred
into ground coffee. When the brewing is finished, force is applied only
to separate the saturated grounds from the brewed coffee. The extraction
itself is not done under force (pressure).

I have often wondered what the amazing appeal is for the coffee
machines? My daughter bought me one because she was so impressed?
I put it on the kitchen counter beside my old coffee brewer. I should
have pushed back against my daughter insisting I have one when I found
out you buy "pre-ground coffee portions" to load in this machine to
make coffee.

The people who use this machine have been deprived all their lives and
have never enjoyed the exceptional taste and flavor of "freshly ground
coffee." I even bought one of those adapters so I can put my own
freshly ground coffee into the machine and that did produce an
acceptable cup of coffee. I still find myself grinding the beans and
making full pots of coffee I enjoy!
