Question: sun dried tomatoes in bag
I have a question about sun dried tomatoes. I bought a bag of them a while back, did not use them right away, and lost track of time. Today I walked to the market to get ingredients for a braised pork I want to make Thursday.
Since I already had the sun dried tomatoes I didn't need to buy any. They come in a thickish plastic envelope which is sealed. I looked at the date and it says, 3/20/14, which means they are 6 months past the sell date.
They have salt in them, an 8 ounce package with maybe 2400 milligrams of sea salt. I personally would take the gamble and in fact don't consider much of a gamble at all, but would like to know how others feel about it. I got them at Whole Foods and all it says on the label is 365. On the back it says distributed by Whole Foods. I don't have a car and am really not in the mood for another long walk to and from the store.
To be safe you can always say, "Go ahead and use them." That way, if I don't get sick or die I'll think you know everything. If I get sick and die you are off the hook. Anyway, for a sealed food with salt in it, 6 months beyond the sell date does not seem so great to me, but I'd like to hear how others feel about it. Thanks.
