I don't know if there are food that cause psoriasis to flare. For me, the sun does. For most others the sun makes it better. But arthritis? Yes, for many food does affect it. Mostly nightshades and wheat. But some people find that food doesn't affect it. As for the gout, which is a form of arthritis, they no longer recommend the gout diet. But if a person knows that something will cause a flare, they would do best to avoid it. A you can see there is no one size fits all. Just as for diabetes. |

You almost lost a foot a couple of months ago due to walking > around all day with a nail in your shoe poking you every step. Wake > up. My comment has nothing to do about diet coke but all to do about > foot numbness due to diabetes. Uh, no. I didn't almost lose a foot. Yes, I had an infection. And I hooked up with some bad Drs. that caused me many more problems by performing an operation that I likely didn't need. And on top of that all by causing a fungal infection and then pushing that deep into my system by what they did. I was told that anyone who had stepped on a nail could have had the sort of infection that I got. Just the fact of stepping on it could have caused that. The fact that I stepped on it repeatedly didn't really matter. Why? They said that not only could the nail have had organisms on it but the bottom of my boot likely did and the nail going through that would have pushed all that into my foot. Every person at the hospital said that the infection was clearing nicely. They did an MRI and there was nothing internally damaged. They could not see why I had the operation done. And the Dr. at the next hospital I had to go into due to sepsis that the foot Dr. caused, told me that I could have a lawsuit on my hands. I am not going to pursue that for various reasons. But those people are no longer my Drs. |

All the more reason that it would be an insult. It's like putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5. I was reading something earlier today about acute pancreatitis which my dad had. Seems the most common cause of that is heavy drinking. He was never a heavy drinker. He did have the occasional beer or wine but not even one per week. I just don't think blaming the patient is helpful. Especially if they are doing what their Dr. told them to do or not do. Sometimes people get sick or get complications from things. In my case, I had complications when I was diagnosed with diabetes. In fact it was the complications that drove me to the Dr. |

How do > they/you know that if they rarely monitor? I believe that is what's called > bolstering an argument with no facts whatsoever. I said they do not monitor what they eat. I did not say that they did not use their blood sugar meter. Those are two different things. And obviously they would know their numbers because they are testing. I have seen their test results. That's how I know. I will give you one example. I won't say who this person is. But I went to dinner with her. She had a regular Sprite and a non-alcoholic daiquiri, a taco salad (did not eat the shell) and a few chips. Her BG was in the vicinity of 80 both before and after the meal. I can't remember the exact numbers. This was a few weeks ago. There is no way that I could ever have even one regular drink like that. Not that I'd want to as I dislike sweet drinks. But I know that I would get a terrible spike. I quit buying soda at all at one movie theater here. Twice I ordered a diet drink. It didn't taste right to me and the few swigs that I took did spike me up very high. I had eaten nothing during the course of the movie. The same thing happened once at a restaurant when Angela was little. It was a place where we had dined a few times and I know that the meal that I ordered did not spike me. I know there was a huge salad but now I can't remember what else I ordered with it. Something with carbs. Probably soup or chili. But one time, the drink didn't taste right to me. I tried to send it back but the waitress didn't want to take it back assuring me that it was diet. That's when I put a few drops on the table and felt it. It felt sticky. At that point I insisted that I get another drink. And I did. But the damage had already been done. I had a big spike two hours later. |

How is it that you are speaking for me? I am quite capable of speaking for myself. My diet isn't crappy at all. My dietician is also a CDE and she knows what I eat. I kept food logs for her for weeks. I use the Cron-O-Meter. And it is hardly carb overloaded. I ate far more carbs prior to learning that I had diabetes. I was a vegetarian then and my meals were often very carby. If I wasn't eating a huge salad then it would be beans and rice, beans and pasta, and much larger portions than I eat now. I also do not inject more insulin to cover the carbs. You don't even know what kind of insulin I am on. It is mostly basal and only one bolus. That is a set bolus at breakfast because most of the time my breakfast does not vary. Do you know what happens to type 2s who try to cover their carbs with insulin? They gain weight! Which I haven't done. Many type 1's can get away with doing this though. Particularly young, active people. I do not just have diabetes. Maybe if I did, things would be easier. I also have thyroid issues and gastroparesis. Although my thyroid tests as normal, I do have a goiter. So my levels are constantly being monitored. I have been hypo and hyper. That seemed to stabilize when I cut soy (for the most part) out of my diet. I know that some restaurants use soybean oil and I do consume some things with soy lecithin in them. I also used soy milk for something that I baked, although I didn't eat very much of it. Mostly I quit eating things like Bocca burgers and roasted soy nuts. |

I don't think they are linked at all. There is no proof of this. If there were, then dieticians wouldn't recommend that we use them. And yes, diabetes can lead to a lot of things including amputation. But no one food or drink can be blamed for that. As I said, the one woman I know who had to have some toes amputated was very careful with what she ate. She was a very thin type 1. She is no longer with us. The diabetes isn't what killed her though. |

My initial wound had already healed by the time the surgery was done which was why nobody could understand why they wanted to operate. Each time I went back, they cut the wound open and the one Dr. jabbed all sorts of things into it. She even broke a stick off into the wound. The visiting nurse said that the wound would never heal if they didn't quit doing this. They also kept the foot totally wrapped up tightly and told me never to unwrap it which is why the fungal infection set in. And due to their mishandling of the wound, they pushed it into my blood stream. You may ask why I continued to go back to them. Well... I couldn't drive and they were the closest Drs. to me. Angela didn't yet have her license and I didn't dare have her drive me lest they put me back in the hospital again. She'd be stranded there with my van. So... Mostly my SIL was driving me and the other Dr. where I eventually went is located where she lives. I didn't want to make her drive all the way out here then back there then back here again then back there to home. I was trying to do what I thought was the frugal and convenient thing but in the end it was a very bad thing. Live and learn. |

I have peripheral neuropathy in my foot from nerve damage starting in my back. I haven't had a nail in my foot, but I've had skin peeling off of my big toe to the point of bleeding and I couldn't feel it. -- ღ.¸¸.œ«*¨`*œ¶ Cheryl |

But as I said, I kept sticking my hand in my boot and couldn't feel anything. The length of the nail was not even as long as the width of the sole of the boot, but they were really cheap boots, more akin to slippers and I'm sure that the sole and the insole compressed down when I stepped down. This doesn't happen when you put your hand into the boot and slide it along. When I did that, nothing sharp was sticking up. I also had black stockings on so I couldn't see any blood or even damage to the stockings. So I convinced myself that the pain I was feeling was from the neuropathy. I now know that any time there is pain, to look at the bottom of my footwear. Had I done that I would have seen the nail. There also wasn't a lot of blood when I did take the sock off. Just a small area of damage about the size of as dime, if that. Most of the punctures were not deep at all, but it was still enough to allow infection to set in. Also, someone who is not diabetic should probably not be commenting on things that happen to diabetics. They do not walk in our shoes so they do not know. An exception might be a person who has a diabetic in the family and knows more about it than the average person. |

There is now proof that artifical sweetners lead to glucose intolerance AKA "pre"-diabetes, which leads to diabetes, which leads to foot amputation, blindness, and death. PROOF. Train yourself to drink stuff that isn't sweet. You aren't a hummingbird, so why do you need to constantly drink sweet stuff? Make it a treat, once a week or so. But soda, diet or no, isn't water, nor is Lifewater or Vitaminwater or Crystal Light or any of that garbage, so don't pretend it is. |
