They hope to gain gullible people, and if you're on the Do Not Call list they're not supposed to call unless they're a charity or a politician or someone you have a business relationship with. I had to laugh the other day when they were giving tips to avoid identity theft in the newspaper, they said make sure you're on the Do Not Call list. Yeah, right, as if they actually enforced it. Yeah, right, as if > they actually enforced it. LOL Ok! We have something like that here but some firms ignore it. Fortunately we get most calls on our mobile phones and if there is a call showing 'number not known' or 'private number' we just don't answer it. Earlier today we got a call on our house phone from someone telling us we have a problem with security on windows! It is better I don't repeat what my husband told him <g> -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/shop/ |

They're trying to get your credit card/bank account/personal information, in order to steal from you. The pretense is that they represent themselves as being a company offering a service or great deal - free groceries or medicines, free security system, free vacation, low-rate credit card or home mortgage, etc. - but in order to get the deal, you have to pay a fee, or at the very least provide them with your financial information. They take credit cards, or if you'll authorize a deduction from your bank account, they can do that, too. Then they either run up your card/empty your bank account themselves, or they sell the information on the grey market. Or both. Plus, they sell your contact info, since you are now a sure sucker. That's another source of income for them - giving your information to other swindlers, for a fee. I don't know how many times I have to stress this: these are not legitimate companies. They are swindlers spinning the marks a pitch. The goal is to get access to their financial data, so they can steal from the marks. |
