What a stupid thing to say. Any vet will tell you spay/neuter is the
responsible thing to do. Unless you plan on taking care of, feeding,
and providing veterinary care for all the puppies and kittens that will
result from *not* having your pets "fixed".

their overpopulation is a good thing.

Despite all the negative comments, I want to give you a big hats off. My shelter continues to take in litters of kittens because ppl are just to #$%^ ignorant, lazy or poor to get em fixed. We have a very active adoption program, and there are a number of TNR groups and spay clinics. That said, I am nevertheless convinced that until someone pays a BOUNTY for fixin', the problem won't go away entirely.

I'll admit that some abused it - they were taking it to Walmart, pleading for a refund, ("My dog didn't like it"), and, sans receipt, dumb Walmart was giving them gift cards. Leave it some to find an angle. Anyhoo, now we have to use an Xacto and remove the bar code so that Walmart knows it was never paid for by the returner.

My concern was not that "clients" would be abusing the pet food by
taking it back for refunds. My issue was that if people have to go to a
food bank because they cannot afford to feed themselves, they are not in
a position to take on the responsibility of an animal that has to fed
and will need medical care.

Someone blew the whistle. I guess it's a rather common and Walmart will prob. soon be changing their return policy.

Big piece in my paper about a gal who shoplifted and then returned to Walmart for gift cards. Out on bond now. Oh, they think they're so smart, the jerks. The mother actually turned the girl in - she knew the dtr wasn't working and yet came home with 600 bucks in gift cards. Mother still charged with receiving stolen property.

They aren't "taking on' a pet - the ownership is a fait accompli.

A client getting free food last week asked if we had any birds and was told "You can't adopt if you're getting free food. Wait til you're in a better financial situation."

We had a dippy neighbor who insisted every female cat they acquired
should have a litter so that her children could witness "the miracle of
birth." Then she'd send the kids around the neighborhood with a box
full of kittens to give away, finally turning over the last to the local
animal shelter because she didn't want to house them all.
Nice lesson for the kids? Not so much.

My guess is that if somebody owned your ass and took you to the doctors and you woke up to find your nut sac sliced with it's contents removed, you might consider it to be mutilation, not neutering. :-)

I guess people have different opinions about that. I think of cats along
the line of farm implements, and that their primary function is to keep
down the rodent population. We had a number of outdoor cats over the
years, though we have not had any for about 10 years now. We never had
problems getting rid of kittens. I never understood why people would do
to a pet shop and pay good money for some mongrel cat, or pay to adopt
one from the humane society. I never had to drive more than a few
minutes to find a place with a "free kittens" sign.

I can get wild cats most anywhere in my home town. There used to be a bunch at my workplace parking lot but these days, a flock (herd?) of chickens have taken over. The chickens have also taken over the parking lot of our condo. I can't say why there's such an explosion in the wild cat and chicken populations. At times we'll even see wild pigs around the place. No wild dogs though.

Cats and dogs are animals. You're anthropomorphising them. A male cat does
not understand anything about the function of its testes. No one but a
licensed breeder should be breeding cats and dogs as long as we are gassing
a bunch of them every day, and feral cats are destroying songbird populations.

Spay/neuter not only prevents over-population but also prevents a number
of health issues in both males and females in adult life.

Nuts to that. Breeders of various species are animals are artificially
manipulating the gene pools of their products. While breeding animals
for specific trades they desire for the breed they are also breed in
deleterious traits that weaken the species. We won't always be around to
care for the creatures we help to create, so there should always be some
that are allowed to reproduce and to survive on their own for the
survival of the species.

Have a look at some the problems inherent to various breeds of dogs.
Some have a tendency to hip problems, skin problems, behaviour problems.

Thanks for the lecture on how I think, how cats think about stuff, your
ideas who should be able to breed cats, and your personal plans to
procreate. My very simple point was that "mutilation", while not
politically correct, would an apt term.
