So, I go down to Safeway to buy a 2lb pkg of their thick slice bacon
(which is really quite good) at an almost $5 discount. Yay. But, upon getting home, I see from the receipt I've only gotten $3 off. WTF? knowing how smarmy Safeway is about their notoriously deceptive ads, I read the flyer again. Sure enough, the extra $2 discount is with a "U", as in "just for U" discount thingie, of which I've never heard of. So, go to their website and get telco support number and call them. Sure enough, now they have extra discounts if you are willing to officially register and provide a valid email address for them to further intrude on and track your life. Not gonna happen. What a bunch of baloney. Just put it on sale, and forget the cards that keep track of buying habits. Personally, I am trying not to shop at stores that require a card to get the discounts even though Safeway does have good buys with the Just for U discounts. S-Mart and Smart and Final are about the only stores that don't require them, now all of the drugstores in town CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreen's require them too, it's just maddening. Cheri |

For the few stores around here that haven't dropped the silly "loyalty card" nonsense, I either give them a random phone number, or for some I use a card that I got but never "registered" or in any way gave them any information for. |

If you pay with plastic they know everything about you anyway. Those who are behind on paying their bills are the ones attempting to hide from their local businesses. I like getting my discounts. I think the main reason that stores bother with keeping tabs and issue discounts is to maintain the local shoppers... businesses have been attracting regular patrons with discounts for as long as I can remember... my mom would shop the same stores and would receive more than her dollar's worth. We have cards for both of the stores here, Food Lion and Ingles. We do the bulk of our shopping at Ingles. I have signed up for the email notifications from Ingles. So every Sunday morning I get an email from them letting me know what things we buy are on sale the coming week. We also have their Advantage card. Last year we spent about $3500 on groceries there and saved about $500. They print out the savings on our receipts. We stock up when things are on sale: coffee, BOGO or 4 pound bag of sugar for $1.88 (Christmas baking is coming up.) They are also great about charging $5 when I buy 5 of something priced 10 for $10. Their meats and produce are excellent and they carry high quality name brands in addition to their top quality store brands. The fact that the store is always clean and uncluttered helps. Also the fact that everyone is friendly. You rarely have to wait at the checkout-out. The manager will open a lane if there are more than about 3 in a line. He also stocks shelves when necessary. I must say I feel sorry for the people who have to shop in such poor grocery stores as I hear about here. -- Susan N. This is why you don't give them a random phone number. If you don't have your card you simply give them your number. And I find when I'm at a self-service checkout it is easier to key in my number than to dig into my wallet and find the card photocopy. Photocopy you ask? Yes. All of the cards are overly thick. They had a rule about not being able to use your last password or the one before that, so I was rotating three of them - but I think they've changed that because I reset it to what (I think) the last one was and the website didn't give me any trouble about it. Dale ======= I will say that the Safeway here is a very nice store, clean and shiny, just don't want to jump through the hoops to get their sale prices. Things that aren't on sale are very high priced though. Cheri |

And then I just buy the soda. |

We also had Albertsons and some other small market that sold kosher meat. It was like an old market from the 60's. Same signage and all. Albertsons was the closest store to me and had the best prices but if I went out to the dinky little mall I had a choice of Albertsons or Safeway. Both seemed to be about the same but with prices overall better at Albertsons. But... If we went to Bay Farm Island, the Safeway was *much* better. Especially the produce department. They had everything, including heirloom tomatoes. But the ones here? They annoy me. Prices through the roof! Then they'll make a big announcement that they've lowered prices. So I'll go there and sure enough, there will be some bargains. But then? They creep back up and are higher than the other stores again. I do know some people who work there or have worked there including my neighbors. Seems like a good place to work. But not such a good place to shop. I think I only ever did a big shop at Safeway once. That was during the time when we had two back to back shut down the city type snowstorms. We were running low on food and I surmised that their parking lot might have less ice than Albertsons. Boy was I wrong about that! That was the trip where my husband kept slipping on the ice and dropped the same potato countless times as he tried to get to his car. Left us shouting, "Leave the potato!" Because everyone was in the same boat as we were, the shelves were pretty bare. And we knew the next storm was coming any minute. This was right before Christmas and I hadn't even had a chance to buy any special foods. We basically ran up and down the aisles and tossed in anything that didn't seem terribly objectionable, only because the foods we would normally eat were for the most part not there! Yes, we were eating processed foods and things we would rather not And we paid a pretty penny for the crappy food. But we made it through the winter. This incident stays so fresh in my memory that I do keep a rather large stockpile now, at least through the winter. I did not not have a stockpile then like I do now. And the only extra thing that I did have was actually some kind of off brand gluten free cereal for Angela. Only purchased because we'd gone into North Seattle to have lunch with a friend. She was running late so we ventured into the nearby Safeway. Found the cheap cereal and bought it Then got that rat in our garage. That was not a good winter. I keep canned goods out there now, but no cereal! |

I shop in an Albertsons's chain and they also dropped the card a few months ago. Just one less thing to bother with. Maybe one day my wallet will be lighter when I no longer have to carry all those cards. One one shopping trip I saw the cashier wait for a guy to fish out his store card at the place that no longer requires a card. I guess they must still have some use. Perhaps he was writing a check though I didn't notice that. nancy |

What drives me crazy about all the drug stores is bad enough you have to use your card to get the sale, but they all have these irritating points/rewards programs. I don't want any damn "Bucks" or "Reward Points" or whatever. I hate games like that with a passion. And then you see what you need on sale but you'd better hope you need it a lot because half the time it's buy one, get one half price. Used to be fun to shop in drugstores. nancy |

I was told that you could use the card for gas rewards, although I don't know of any of their gas stations. Not sure that still applies though. I do still see people all the time who present their cards and act shocked when they hear that they no longer take them. |

Walgreens gives me that receipt for a good amount off of my next order but it has to be used in 24 or 48 hours or something like that. Seeing as how Walgreens is not convenient to me and I do not do a lot of brick and mortar drugstore shopping, I am not likely to go back to redeem it. Plus their is not likely to be anything else I would need to buy. Right Aid sometimes does the same but I think you have a week or two to redeem. You still have to bring the danged receipt back in. Um... I've got your card! Load it to the card! I did actually redeem one of those. Daughter needed some sort of school supplies. Can't remember now what but we went there and got them. |

I carry the little plastic tags on my key ring for the local stores I shop, only takes a second to scan and I get several discounts. I get the stupidmarket circular emailed to me, arrives a week earlier than the printed version so I can more easily plan. The store I shop also lets me click on items on line so when/if I do buy them I automatically get an even larger discount. I don't concern myself with stores knowing who I am, they know anyway if you shop there... there are cameras everywhere, they know your automobile, even who you shop with, when you pay with plastic they have a photo of your card, show your driver's license to buy booze they have a crisp clear photo of that too. In this new high tech world it's very difficult to be annonymous, near impossible... so I'm not going to concern myself about stores tracking what I buy, they know anyway... they have a photo of you and your plastic at the register tied to your receipt... they know what you buy every time you shop, they know better than you do about your purchases. Actually they don't care about your personal info because if ever needed for legal purposes it can be pulled up in minutes... they have a photo of you and your car's plates every time you patronize the store... with Google Maps they can peek into your bedroom window... you only think you have privacy sunbathing nude on your back deck. |

If I didn't feel so cr*ppy, I would have gone a few more miles down the road to my HMO and bought generic from them. As it is, I spent easily 5 times more than I would have spent there just because the drugstore was close and convenient. Safeway pulls cr*p like that too - buy two frozen items, get a third for free. This is an urban area, how many people have stand alone freezers to store all the stuff they don't need in? That's why I buy what few frozen items that I do buy at Trader Joe's. I like what they sell (petit peas - fire roasted corn) and I don't have to buy a truckload just to get a decent price. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I do just fine shopping at Safeway without using any online deals, but the one sale item that I've decided to load up on the next time it's on a "real" sale is Lay's lightly salted potato chips. Hubby loves those things and always asks me to buy them *if* they are on sale. What he means by sale is $2.50 each or BOGO. It was "on sale" for $3.99 this week - they claim it's supposed to be $4.49. but I bought him a package anyway and told him that we're going to load up on those things the next time they're on a real sale. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |
