In a recent thread on malware someone recommended Malwarebytes. I
downloaded it and ran it.It found something in my wife's profile, and
she had previously had an incident of one of her accounts sending out
emails to her contacts. What a coincidence that two days before my trial
period ended all my email contacts got suspicious emails with an
attachment.

There is a free version, and you may like to do a search on some
reviews, and see if they reflect your perception of Malwarebytes?

Hmmm... My computer store recommends it. I had something prior that came
recommended to me by someone on another newsgroup but it was crap. I want
to say that it was Adaware but that might be wrong. As soon as I got it,
not only did I get all sorts of spam but it was constantly telling me that
it found suspicious stuff on my computer that wasn't really suspicious at
all.

Does your wife have Facebook? I am getting a lot of emails from people on
my Facebook with attachments. I know that it isn't them simply because they
refer to me as Julia and I don't go by that.

Why? Are there some naysayers? I will check. Daughter and I have the Pro
version which you do have to pay for.

I get invitations to Facebook from a friend
of mine that died in 2010.

Not to my knowledge... that was kinda my point if Dave thinks
Malwarebytes is some sort of scam. It's always had a very good
reputation, from what I've seen.

Ah... After I posted that I did remember a recent boo boo on their part. A
friend had told me about it. Let me see if I can dig up a link. Here it
is:

I think most people were unaffected though.

Me too. But then recently it required daughter and I to buy the Pro. No
biggie. It wasn't expensive.

That is likely because the survivors [me included] take forever to
tell Facebook that the person has died. Facebook will convert the
page to a memorial page so folks can still post to the wall if they
care to, but no-one will get friend requests.

Hopefully I'll get around to it in less than 3 years-- but at the rate
I'm 'catching up' now, it could be that long.

I've used it too and no problems here.

Are you saying you had to buy it because you got a bug or because the
trial version ran out? If it was the end of your 30 day trial of the
full version, you could have selected the free one.

Do you run it alongside Kaspersky (not sure if you run that or not) or
instead of?

The free one ended. I'd had the free one for years! It had been taken off
by...Norton? Carbonite? I can't remember now. I had some problem with one
of their programs. They took over my computer by remote and I watched in
horror as they took off the Malwarebytes. Said it was in conflict with
their service. Then a few days later, I got a virus that disabled my
Norton. Had to take it to the shop. And what did they put on there to find
it? Yep! Malwarebytes! Then at some point later (can't remember when), my
trial ran out and I had to buy. Same thing happened with my daughter's
computer. My brother freaked when I told him this and he said that he
thought the Pro version that we bought was a scam. Doesn't seem to be at
all. Perhaps the old version could be used for free for a long time? But
this one not?

No, I use Clamwin for anti virus, Malwarebytes and my router's
firewall does the rest. Oh, plus plain old common sense

I have a router, but I certainly do NOT trust it to be everything else
Malwarebytes is not.

The new version can be used for free too. They give you the full
version for 30 days and then you switch over. The only difference is
that you don't have the flash scan with the free version, which in
most cases is not necessary anyway. However, you are *not* required
to buy the pay version to get it free.

No idea. I used Malwarebytes for a long time, changed computers and
didn't install it for a long time. Then I installed it again, but
there is no difference other than the one I noted in another post. I
thought my trial period ran out yesterday, but I just ran a flash
scan and it seems to still be doing that for me - so I have no idea
what the real difference is at this point in time.

No clue what a flash scan is. But what you said didn't make any sense. If
you pay then it is not free. All I know is that one day my MBAM was not
working and it told me that I needed to upgrade to Pro which I did. Same
exact thing happened to Angela's computer.

What is a flash scan?

If you've ever paid attention to what you download, what I said would
have made perfect sense. I told you from recent personal experience
that you are *not* forced to upgrade Malwarebytes to the pay version
after a trial period.

If you have to ask, then you didn't use Malwarebytes and you have no
idea what it really is that you're complaining about.

Yes, you told me that. But you've told me a lot of things that aren't
right. And I do pay attention. I had the free version and at one point it
said that I needed to upgrade.

I do use it. I will look. I don't think it lists any such thing. But I
will go look now. *sigh* Okay. I see that it is listed but I still don't
know what it means. Says it will analyze memory and autorun objects. Still
don't know what that means or why I would need to do it. I only ever
perform the quick or full scan.

LMAO! I have to pass this on to coworkers. We have so many issues with
McAfee but we have no control over its use. Every time I have to
install a patch on a server I have to go through hoops to get the damn
thing disabled.

A flash scan is just a very quick scan, it only checks memory and autorun
objects so it won't find malware which is on a hard drive.

So, would you use it alongside Kaspersky?

Well I am asking because I've never had it and am thinking about it.

Thanks, Vilco. Can you tell me if it would conflict with Kaspersky?

I don't know about MBAM + Kaspersky in particular, but MBAM is made to work
next to an antivirus so generally speaking that shouldn't be an issue

I just ran my free version of MalwareBytes and it ran perfectly. My
Norton has occasionally told me that there is a conflict with
MalwqareByres and I should remove it. I've ignored that and have
never seemed to have a problem. My personal opinion is that the
conflict with Norton is with Norton's bottom line...

But why would you need to do that?

That wasn't the problem. And I can't say for sure that it was the Norton.
Could have been the Carbonite because I had trouble with that too.
Whichever it was, the idiot tech removed the Malwarebytes. Whichever of
these it was, it just wouldn't load. Have had problems with Norton telling
me that I need to renew when I do not. Have had to contact them and they
have to jump through hoops to get it going again. Had the same problem with
Carbonite at least once.

"very quick": when you dont' want to wait for the 3-4-5 minutes of the quick
scan

I use Spybot once in a while. It appears to be similar to Malwarebytes.
However, my main security software, ESET, also protects against malware so
Spybot has proved to be superfluous.
From what I can see, Kaspersky is currently rated as better than ESET so I
reckon you probably have malware protection. Go into your Kaspersky program
and see what it protects you against or alternatively go to their website.

Thanks, Graham! Himself has checked and says that it looks ok! I just
wondered if there were any benefits to using both, but I
guess we will just stick with what we have) Thanks very much for the
advice, much appreciated

Spybot has been reckoned to be one of the better ones out there and many say
that it's useful to use such a program in addition to your main software as
it might pick up something the other misses. In fact, some who have just
basic AV software advocate having 2 spyware programs.
Spybot doesn't interfere with ESET and ESET uses a similar algorithm to
Kaspersky AIUI.
By the way, I know sod-all about such things in general. I'm just recounting
my experience. I have Kaspersky on my tablet.
