Default True or False?

I am reading "Leaving Home" by Louise Grace. Reading old cookbooks is
something I enjoy; occasionally I even learn something. Beneath her recipe
for French Onion Soup, Ms Grace adds the note: Do not store onions next to
potatoes for they will take moisture from the potato and tend to mold
faster.
Do you suppose there's any truth to this? Polly

False. They will cause the potatoes to sprout.

I learned, after it was specifically pointed out, to separate them. I
now keep my potatoes in a cupboard drawer (not a refrigerator bin) and
my onions are on the counter with winter squash.

Okay so maybe I was wrong but... I know that they should not be put
together.

I go thru onions and spuds pretty fast, so I have never had the problem. I took Sheldon's advice about hand choosing onions and spuds and always have the right size now on hand. I may pay a little more per pound, but I like the choice factor.

I don't always hand choose. But I will never buy them again from Costco.
Too many rotten ones! I do normally hand choose onions but once in a while
if I am feeling cheap or am cooking something with a ton of onions in it, I
will buy a cheap large bag of the yellow ones.

We do not eat many potatoes any more so I usually hand choose but if I see a
super good sale on the bags, I will get a bag and then try to figure out
what to do with them.

I don't know when that happened to you, but I remember one year not
too long ago when it seemed like every potato I cut into had a black
core and none of them came from Costco - so don't blame them. It was
some sort of blight... it was so bad it was even discussed here.

I like to buy onions by the bag because I like using the small sized
ones that they put in bags. It means that I can use the entire onion
in one or two meals, so it's not sitting half the week in the
refrigerator while I whittle away at it. However, I've been buying
the larger ones lately because they're charging to danged much for a
tiny sack of onions AFAIC.

Yes, I had that too and they weren't from Costco. The problem from Costco
was mold. Plus there is no way we could ever eat that many potatoes before
they went bad. The onions? Perhaps. I do use a lot of onions.

Whoa! You and I are just the opposite. I prefer the really large ones and
I can easily use 2-3 of those for one meal. But it all depends on what I am
making. For smaller amounts in cooking, I usually just use the dried ones.

I don't go through them very fast and never buy potatoes by the bag
unless I'm cooking for a crowd.

That's very true! I did not know this for many years and stored them
together. I know better now.
