Default Another Dataw Island Lunch Special 4/23/2013

Thought I'd sent this, if it's a duplicate I apologize; my ISP may have
burped. We will not be partaking of this:

Corned Beef Hash
Served with bacon & eggs your way
and a side of toast
7.25

Who serves bacon with corned beef hash? (I love poking fun at these
people.)

The person who routinely sends out the lunch and dinner specials
occasionally gets the dates mixed up. Someone give that person a
calendar! Last weekend they emailed the lunch specials for April 13th.
Like the Titanic, that ship had sailed.

There are also typos on the "member" web site. Deilcisious lobster.
Really?

Well yes that bacon "and" corned beef is wild. Not that I would nag of course. I loves them both dearly and can make exceptions to gastronomical foo paws..lol. shut up and eat..lol

The prices are reasonable, at least. You'd pay $3 more at a Hobee's
or Eat 'n Park. More than half the dining assessments aren't used.
And it makes sense for them to serve unappetizing-sounding cafeteria
food.

The thing that makes these menu selections unreasonable (in addition to the
strange combinations of food) is that Jill and other residents are forced to
pay a huge annual fee, whether or not they actually order the food. It
sounds like many homeowners do not want to eat there on a regular basis, so
there should be a very large profit for the HOA (or the restaurant,
depending on how the fees are split).

I worry about the day that I might need to be in a nursing home or some such
place. The place where my dad is at must have gotten a Costco sized package
of mixed vegetables. They seem to get those every night. Also common are
pasta, fish sticks, chicken nuggets, tater tots and canned soup. I realize
that they are perhaps limited as to what they can serve elderly people but
with food like that it is no wonder that my dad is rapidly losing weight.
We do bring him a meal now and then but... For what is being paid, we
shouldn't have to supply the food!

Yes, this seems to be a major problem with nursing homes. I really resented
the fact that I thought my mother's food when she was in a nursing home was
rather unpalatable. And this was the nursing home that was considered to be
the best one in the area and was rather expensive! It hurt because food was
just about the only thing that my mother could enjoy at that time in her
life. I kept her in my own home and was her sole caregiver until she became
completely bedridden. At that time, I had to use a nursing home because I
could not lift and turn her myself. I did recognize that it was better both
for her and for me at that time, but it was the most horrible decision I
ever had to make. Incidentally, I was able to get certain foods added to
her tray by having her doctor write specific orders for it. Nursing homes
are required to abide by such doctor's orders.

I feel bad for my MIL. Although she said the food was good where she is at,
due to her medical conditions, she can only now have finely minced foods and
anything liquid needs to be made thick. She is no longer allowed to have
things like bread and salad. She might as well be eating baby food! Now
she doesn't want to eat.

Only been to a couple of nursing homes. Aunt Chickie was in Treemont in
Houston, which was pricey, we enjoyed taking her out for lunch, but we
ate lunch there a couple of times, you ordered from a menu.

My mother was in a nursing home for one month, she did not like it and
would not go back. The food they brought her on the day that we visited,
was catfish, pinto beans, fried okra, cold slaw and hushpuppies. I
forget what she has for dessert, she was never a sweet eater when I grew
up, she preferred a martini, at the time.

Oh yeah, they're making money hand over fist. I *do* think a lot more
people eat there than I give credit. I know at the end of the year when
the remaining dining assessment is due, a lot of people buy bottles of
wine. They'll at least have something to show for it. Since I'm no
wine connoisseur, with my luck I'd pay $24 for a bottle that tastes like
vinegar. LOL

Naturally they have a stupid rule: you can't carry out more than two
bottles of wine at a time. One of the servers told me people pull their
cars up front, go in, buy two bottles, take them to the car, then go
back in and buy two more. I see no reason to make people go through
this ridiculous exercise. AFAIC, if they want to back up a truck and
load it with *cases* of wine they should be allowed to do so.

You are aware of the fees and their restrictions before you buy a house,
so this does not come as a surprise. You agree or you don't buy. In my
old neighborhood, we paid $800 per year, and that was in 1986. Not sure
how much it costs, now. They place was beautifully landscaped, though.

Yeah, sure. Too bad I didn't buy the house. The real estate agent
would have informed me.

*Their* landscaping is great. Oh, I'll admit it's a lovely place. But
I have to pay someone to take care of my yard. I thought I could do it
myself but it's very sandy, soft soil. Also filled with gopher holes!
Caddy Shack, anyone? LOL. The mower sinks right down into the dirt.
You shouldn't have to push a self-propelled lawnmower.

I wouldn't be so objectionist about things if the fees included them
maintaining my yard. That is not the case.

That $838 dollars is the *dining* minimum. Even if you don't eat (or
call ahead and get carry-out) from the Club, you owe them that money at
the end of the year. Oh, and they just raised another annual assessment
for maintaining THEIR property to $2000. This is for beautification,
new signage, landscaping, etc. Multiply that by roughly 800 residents.
They're making money hand over fist.

I was out at the mailbox last week and ran into an older woman. I'd
just gotten my DIC bill in the mail. IIRC she said she's 85. Somehow
the subject of the Dataw Island Club always comes up in conversation.
She said, "Oh, I'm not a member." See, she did what my parents did and
opted out in 2001. Then they changed the by-laws so now you're not
allowed to do that.

She said her son is living with her, helping her out. That's what I did
with my parents. When I told her they'd forced me to join the Club in
2011 she said "Oh, I need to think about this." She was considering
leaving him the house, like my mother did. Now she knows they'll force
him to join even if it takes a few years to get around to it.

It's really not fair. My father chose to build here because he was an
avid golfer. He could afford it. But even he was able to opt out after
a while. That is no longer the case unless you were a member prior to 2001.

I know someone whose monthly maintenance fee is over $2000 a month and
there are no grounds, garage or gym to maintain.

Yeah, that's not too bad a price for lunch. But you can't convince me
they actually made the corned beef hash from scratch. I'd have had to
see it to believe it. It's a tad late to be serving leftover corned
beef from St. Patrick's Day. I sure didn't notice corned beef as one of
the dinner specials recently. After the Hillshire Farms "marinated"
sausage sub I'm suspicious as to how much they actually *cook*. I'd
love to get a look at the kitchen, the walk-in and the freezer.
