It's very good... enjoying it... Guy was really into fishing. He's
talking now about the funeral home and the girl with cold hands, and the
couple that would bring a sofa and fish a the lake.... so far, no cooking
recipes. But maybe there's one about cooking fish? I would not be
surprised. Haven't read the book in 25 years and don't remember the
details, just that I liked it.

Is the title a reference to something?

They never cook fish. They "cook" Kraft mac & cheese. Later on,
there's a Mexican fry cook who cooks hamburgers.

Well my ex has me all atwitter and feeling pretty desperate. I've been
"fired" by three therapists now. Mental health services are pretty expensive
and my welfare payments are quite small and medicaid doesn't cover much. I
guess getting paid is more important to them than treating me.

At least there is no copay to get advice about my problems from the people
here. And they seem to be at least as interested in my welfare as the
shrinks I have visited.

I'm trying to make sense out of nonsense... Lost my job I had for 19 years
about year and half ago... Then was unemployed for year and half but
finally had something come through, same retirement system. But lost that
too... I called in sick two days because of the flu, but during first 90
days you can only "lose-out" aka miss one day. I misunderstood and thought
it was two... I didn't really think I should be coming in if sick. (Do
they really want me getting other people sick?)

So back to where I was again... TBH, very depressing. Thought I was back
on track. And I really was trying to do well with this new job. And don't
really have any prospects at the moment.

At the moment, trying to figure out what to do. Hard to find work when you
are almost 50, and I've heard lot of companies now don't even bother to look
at a resume if you aren't currently working... Maybe I should try and go to
school and get something healthcare related. Seems there will always be a
need for people in that.

In some ways, I feel like I'm getting to enjoy some "retirement" early. But
I know money will run out... So, yes there is some sort of problem.
Depression, Anxiety.

At least I'm getting a new roof this week and insurance is paying most. I
love the house I bought (for my ex ) and trying to do right by it.

I was a foreclosure specialist in the mortgage division of a major national
(as in bailed out) bank. That's what I don't understand, losing a job like
that when I did. Foreclosures were at an all time high when I lost my job,
and I really liked it, loved it in fact. It gives me quite a feeling of
power to sign a piece of paper that causes an entire household to be
summarily thrown out on the street, kids, furniture, pets, and all. Most of
those people were deadbeats and liars who didn't deserve to own a house.
Mostly I was really good at intimidating those people into getting out
before it was necessary to get them out by force. I suppose the complaints
to the State made my employer angry, or they just fired me to get the AG's
office off their backs. But I was just doing what was expected. Oh well.

Don't waste your money on *An Unfortunate Woman*. It just isn't a
good book. Perhaps Brautigan was so disappointed in it, that it
tipped him over the edge. It is the only one of his books that is
crappy.

Hey, for you Brautigan fans, you might like John Crowley's *Little,
Big*. The writing style is different, but no less bizarre and
intense.

I don't qualify for Medicare. Have to have dependent children or be disabled in this state. May change in 2014 when AHCA goes in effect, but maybe not even then.

Well, the library had it so I'll give it a go... His daughter's memoir is interesting... I just read that he had set timers on his lights, etc in his house before he died... She wonders if he had planned to go on a trip, and something else set him off so he never went on the trip. Who knows? He'd apparently been on the precipice for many years. She says when she was 8 he told her, but that he pulled himself together for a few years.

The Crowley book sounds interesting. Library has a couple copies.

Usenet has enough freaks it makes sense to use a handle for many people
who have not been on Usenet forever. Some posters aren't anonymous

The security model is from a by-gone era and has not worked for

Absolutely more bizzare than the subway or bus. On Usenet posters
regularly act in ways that would get them arrested or assaulted had they
said that in person. There are crazies on the subway or bus but even
they know relatiation is an option in person so they tend to not cross
the line. Lunatic posters hide behind the anonymity and cross the line
with impunity. The word impunity literally means immune to punishment.

I don't see how using a KF is a blame-the-victim approach. I am not even
sure who the victim is, whether it is the person whose personality is so
flawed that he/she is compelled to post stupidly and relentlessly, or if
it is the other people whose group is filled with their bile and/or idiocy.

Did you mean to say "blame-the-victim" approach? There's no shame in
using a kill file. The only posters who are against it are those who
don't have the capability to kill and are too lazy to change or they
are the perpetrators. Personally, I love kill files. Not only do I
kill posters, I also kill key words for trolls/spam and I kill
legitimate threads I'm not interested in reading or become bored with
after a while. Some people call it killing "noise".

Have you ever read "White Noise" by Delillo? I always liked the title and
finally got around to reading it a few months ago.

They save me from being tempted to respond to people and threads that I
should not bother with. Speaking of which... I confess to have succumbed
recently to some I had previously decided I was better off not to deal
with. She is going into the KF by name and topic.

Read some tirades against people who use a service that does not offer
kill files. Read some tirades against people who have not learned to
use their filters. Where the shame is is in not using kill files. And
that's why it's a blame the victim approach. The reader who is already
assaulted by messages that would have been handled by customer service
anywhere but Usenet complains on the group and is then doubly abused for
being ignorant not just of Usenet but also of their own custom loaded
software or lack thereof.

Agreed on all that but none of it alters the fact that abusive messages
make it to the user for processing rather than being handled at the
customer service level and then anyone who complains about this simple
fact is abused for complaining. It's a wonder Usenet has seen a single
new poster in the last decade with how frequent such abuse is.

My filter blocks based on number of cross postings. Some high noise
groups I drop all cross posted messages. Trolls add cross posts to off
topic groups hoping to generate replies by people who do not notice the
addition. At the moment I use a reader that asks me to confirm any
cross post by me and offers to only post to the group I'm reading.

I also filter based on the names of groups in the list. Numerous
groups are troll magnets. Plus I filter anonymizers, certain rogue
servers that are known to host a high percentage of trolls. I also use
the !ignore verb to drop all responses to certain known trolls.

When I reply, my reader notifies me immediately when a post is
crossposted and I have the option of replying just to the group, to
all groups or I can modify the groups.

You filter by domain? I haven't done that very much, but I do filter
out trolls the same way I filter out every other poster I don't want
to see. Admittedly, some are harder to filter out than others but I
just go to the ng that deals with my reader and they've told me how to
filter say, symbols or changing numbers in the name.

person. I might not agree with what is said, and I might get annoyed by

I forgot you? You're not a complainer. Disagreeing on a point or two
is not the same as complaining about things that are easily resolved
with a kill file.

I read more than half of the posts here--I am a very fast reader--and
have plenty of time to cook, though I admit to not doing my share of
the dish washing.
