Default zucchini madness

So the one plant I didn't plant this year is the biggest and baddest
plant in my little garden. (I planted zucchini last year.) It is
about 10 feet long and has elephant ear size leaves. I like zucchini,
but this one plant is going to produce a bushel! I count 9 started
already and that is only the ones I can see. There are always some
hidden ones. And there's more flowers blooming.

I figure the zucchini I can't eat I can use to throw at the damn
squirrel that is already eying the tomato plants. Squirrels around
here are Satan's evil illegitimate spawn.

LOL- my ex MIL grated them and then froze them to be added to pasta
sauce at a later time. You can always do the doorbell ditch to your
neighbors!

lol! doorbell ditch, funny idea.

II like them in spaghetti sauce and on pizza, but I learned needs to
be in moderation. I have a half a french bread pizza in the toaster
oven with some on it.

Nice- I believe in everything in moderation! Zucchini is one of the
few things we can grow here in the Pacific NW.

Is it? I was under the impression (from books and from rec.gardens) the
PNW is gardener heaven.

I suppose it depends on where you are- we live in a forest basically,
so just not enough sun during the day. But we do a fine job with the
moss!

I can only wish someone would do that to me. I love zucchini.

Me too. I used to grow a lot of it, but the past couple of years critters
eat them before I can, so I stopped the effort.

I quit growing everything. If it wasn't the critters, it was the weather.
The last couple of times I tried to grow tomatoes, they rotted because there
was so much rain.

Yeah, tomatoes don't do well in my neighborhood either. My leeks are
growing, and I have berries ripening. I do have 6 tomato plants, but
don't have high hopes for them!

I think that's a fabulous idea.

I almost did that with cucumbers last year. I love them
but come on!

I don't care for it all that much, but after hearing how
prolific the plants are I thought I'd see for myself.

This plant grew to monstrous proportions and still, no zukes. Whatever
I did wrong, the plant is still too large to fit into my plans.
You know, all that garden space for something I don't have much
use for. I'd rather have eggplant if I was going to plant something
like that.

Besides, I'm at the farmer's market all the time during the summer,
I could buy a bushel of zucchini for next to nothing if I wanted
them.

I was just out to look at my tomato that was just starting to turn
reddish.... It's gone.

Bummer. I hate it when that happens- here, it's usually strawberries
that disappear. Kinda on the same subject- I had the kid clean up dog
poop yesterday so I could mow, and we found bear shit in the
backyard...hope it stays out of the garden!

where do you live? Maybe I can hire Sheldon to deliver some... There
are about dozen that are growing as I type-- and those are the ones I
can see. Zucchini plants love to play "hide the zucchini"!

Sounds like you should pick them young and pick them often! Don't let
them get any longer than 6-8 inches and you should be in good shape.

Heh - yes! My train of thought was limited to zucchini, but now that
you mention the alternative...

I picked my first zucchini this afternoon. It's an odd one though,
looks healthy but is kinda stout. About 4x8 inches. I call him
"Stubby"

My mother had funny names for things too. For instance, she once
bought 3 or 4 piglets to raise for food. One was the runt of the
litter, so she called him "Sausage" because that was his destiny.
