I bought a couple of packs of olives at Winco last week. They came in
plastic bags. There are probably 6 servings per pack. I bought two different kinds (the had more) and one is a mix of olives. It also has some red and yellow peppers in there and there was a bean! The bean looked like a butter bean. It was crunchy! It was very good all soaked in that brine. Has anyone ever seen this before? I have bought a lot of olives in my life but have never seen a bean in there. I'd like to get more of these beans. Does anyone know what it is? Can I buy just the beans? |

Heh! In case anyone's interested, here is a pic: http://www.gourmettrading.com/barnier-olives/ I bought the mixed ones. I looked on the package and they are lupini beans. They have a website but it's all in French. I didn't do so well in French. Has anyone seen these beans just put in olive type brine by themselves? Or any other way? I want some! |

Oh yeah, lupine beans are great, sort of like favas in that they need a lot of work to make. They come in a few packagings and taste great, just do a google to get all their relevant info. They should be available all over the place. Neat find, I'd forgotten about them. pavane |

Now whether this is a pickle type brine or an olive type, I do not know. And apparently you can remove the outer husk before eating, which I did not do. Cento is one brand. I will look for them! |

I didn't see the beans in there until I had dumped them in a bowl. I didn't feel like digging the pouch back out. But then I finally did when I couldn't tell otherwise what they were. I did know they were beans though and not garlic. I don't know any beans that look or taste like garlic! |

I love this, encountering something pleasant by mistake and now being relegated to searching for it over and over till the day you die if you don't find it first. It's like buying a pair of good athletic shoes and when you go back to buy another pair they no longer make them, so you have to hunt all over again for a new pair. Or like when your barber dies and now you have to go find a new one who's going to do as good a job. Finding that accidental bean has you so revved up with joy it's driving you crazy. I think it's funny. But you're right, they probably do keep the beans in brine. If not, you can be the first to swing brined beans into production. And lastly, on a somewhat anal-lytical note, could it be that you loved the bean because it stood alone? Could it be that if it appeared in a can with many other similarly shaped and tasting beans it would suddenly become less desirable? Could it be that if you were eating a can of brined beans such as the ones you seek and encountered a lone olive, you might love the olive with the same unquenchable zeal that you now love the lonesome bean. Sometimes when I get the ones without pits there might be a small unseen bit of a pit left in there, so it's good to be careful when chewing the ones without pits. This is an interesting thread, like a detective novel, only shorter. First it was a bean. Then the bean was identified by name. Now it's suspected to be a piece of garlic. But the evidence is gone, eaten by the original poster whose only proof of her own experience is her memory of it. Maybe it was garlic, maybe it was a bean as she thought - perhaps we'll never know. For the love of God we may never know the answer to this mind numbing puzzle. But we're working it out. We'll get to the bottom of this yet. All the way to the bottom of the pit. TJ |

If they don't have it, you can request it. It's like that tequila with a worm in the bottle. Ok....sorry...that was really dumb. ;0 |
