When a toaster stops popping up the toast and burning it
 

Is there anyway to salvage the toaster and repair it? I moved the
dial a few times and it doesn't matter anymore; it never pops up
anymore. In the past, I just have bought a new toaster but I liked my
toaster and don't want to spend money on a new one.

Hav eyou tried cleaning it. Crumbs build up and can clog the pop-up
mechanism. A few months ago mine stopped popping up. I opened up the
bottom door, shook it, turned it upside down and shook it out, tapped it
a few times. Now it works fine again.

I would just replace it. They're not expensive.

OR.....you could just stand there and watch your toast and pop it up when it
looks ready. Not joking you...sounds like that's your only reasonable
option.

i make my own toasters after you've made your own, you will never go
back to buying pre-made toasters

Reminds me of the LazyBoy recliner I had. Fairly new, my cat clawed/tore
apart the fabric in one spot. So I started to take it apart...and
apart...and apart...if it weren't for the bottle of glue they emptied
into every screw hole I would have been able to patch the troubled spot
with the extra flap of fabric that hung from the top and put it back
together again.

yes sir. I clean the bottom tray fairly regularly, weekly... I think
I may have damaged it by turning it upside down to get out excess
crumbs. Some website said that can cause more harm than good.

yeah, but sometimes I get distracted and forget-- until I smell the
aroma of burnt toast. I guess I should replace it. There's a B&D one

I hate throwing them away. This like the 3rd or 4th one that has done
this in last 20 years. Maybe I could scan it and turn it into a
screensaver? Though it might burn the screen since the thermostat is

I took it apart and stood in bathwater as someone earlier suggested,
but didn't find any crumbs causing a problem. Put it back together
and still doesn't pop up on it's own... Maybe I should plug it in
while standing in the bathwater? And use a metal fork to scrape
around in it? Then my problem(s) should go away.

My favorite hunting memory... I used to go rabbit hunting with a guy
name Al Baylor. Al was really into hunting and skeet shooting and was
an excellent shot. To save money, he often reloaded his shells and was
known to have a beer or three while doing that.

We were hunting one day and Al had a lot of shots and couldn't hit the
broad side of a barn. He was shooting so badly that the rest of us
started to give him a lot of grief about it. Then out of nowhere, a
rabbit ran across Al's line of sight... a mere 10 yards away, hopping
left to right like he was in slow motion. Al raised his shotgun, pulled
the trigger... and nothing. Nothing happened.

Turns out that Al had had a few too many beers the night before while he
was loading the shells. He started checking and many didn't have enough
powder, some didn't have any powder... and a few were missing the shot.

After that, we all called him "Blanks Baylor".

On topic... I made a lot of Hasenpfeffer those winters. Wisconsin
rabbits feed on a lot of corn in the late fall (leavings from when the
fields are harvested) and rabbits taken in early winter were very tasty.

I'm kind of late to this thread, but I have bought too many toasters
too. They aren't expensive, but is there one that lasts, is kind of
compact, makes good toast---and probably not found at COSTCO?

I think those breed of toasters are extinct. I hear stories of
mythical ones--like those you speak of-- from the 50s and 60s that
people claim to have seen or even own, but I have never seen one
myself.

I have a Black & Decker 2-slice toaster with wide slots good for bagels or
english muffins. I've been using it for 15-20 years now and it's "still
going." The energizer toaster.

I went out a couple months back and bought one of those long slot
toasters that will toast four slices of bread or two slides of long
breads like rye. Also has a bagel setting, and a little tray on the
bottom that slides out so you can empty out the crumbs easily. I use
it a few times a week, and I think in ten years all new toasters will
have the various features this one has.
