I finally succumbed to the dark side. I texted my daughter. 'Course,
I hadda call my carrier to get instructions on HOWTO actually generate a txt msg, me being dumber'n a post and cellphone illiterate. I kinda get it, now, how kids can txt w/o looking. I thought ya hadda push shift buttons or something, but no, jes hit that number n number of times. I'm already looking at an upgrade to my $15 tracfone. I can see me eventually sinking down in a death spiral of txtg, pictures, etc. Woe is me. But, it'll be one of those slider models with a full keyboard. I'm too old to be tippy-tappin 250 times fer 8 letters till my thumbs bleed. This, only to reach my daughter and two GDs, who are all cellphone txtg wizards and seemingly total strangers to the spoken word. Also, they'll be my only contacts on this heretofore ingnored Hellspawn device. Everyone else can pound sand or speak actual words into the mouthpiece, as Mr Bell intended. ![]() nb -- vi --the heart of evil! Support labeling GMOs <http://www.labelgmos.org/> |

I only use my cell as an emergency phone, to have in the car and in my purse just in case. I prefer talking to people on a 'regular' phone at home. |

We WILL submit. I finally got with it about two years ago when the wife and I were playing tag-team with my mother-in-law's dementia before we got her to assisted living. > I'm already looking at an upgrade to my $15 tracfone. Good luck. Relative to texting, I carry a phone when I'm out of the house which is about 10 hours a week on a good week. But I have to text people who can't/won't answer their business/cell/home phones. I started using web pages instead. I use callwave.com and it's free. I don't have the thumbs for the phone, and refuse to adopt txtspel as my next foreign language. k? u c wht i meen |

The slider phones are pretty much gone, but the smart phones have a nice touch keyboard. Took me a long time to succumb, but I really like having an Android phone at times. I've used it for practical purposes often. It saved me $10 on a recent vacation. Walked into a hotel and asked for a room. The price she gave me was higher than on-line. I showed her the rate on the web page my phone was open to and she honored the rate. Seven of the ten nights I had no idea where we would be so we made no reservations ahead. With the phone, I was able to find a place, check availability and reserve if I chose to do so. Hungry? The "Near Me" app will list all the restaurants nearby and even reviews for them. Once you have and use it, you'll like having it along for the ride. |

Smart phones with real as well as virtual QWERTY keyboards are widely available, and so are flips and sliders with alphanumeric keyboards. <snip> > Once you have and use it, you'll like having it along for the ride. We had our home phone service disconnected quite some time ago and use that money to get a better cell plan. All of our family and most friends are on VZW so we can call each other anytime at no additional cost. |

We like to bike and previously might not go or quit early because of weather. Now I just look at the weather radar while out on a trail and get a really good picture which often enables us to keep going. Or other stuff like looking at traffic cameras. We go to Philly a lot. If you are leaving Philly and going north you will be using the Schuylkill expressway. Sometimes it is a parking lot sometimes it flows freely. So instead of parking on it for two hours on the way home I can look at the PennDOT cameras. If it is a parking lot I would just as soon do something in Philly for a while longer instead of noodling along for hours on the Schuylkill expressway. Then being able to get airline info. A few weeks ago I was traveling and my flight was running late so I knew I would likely miss my connecting flight. Instead of getting to the airport and scrambling to get to the connection or trying to figure out my next flight the airline already notified me with the new flight number, gate and seat number. |

Same here. If the weather is at all questionable, I look at the weather radar and figure out my changes of staying dry. There have been plenty of times that I figured that I was able to get out and back before the rain hit. The best case was about two years ago when I was doing the therapeutic riding gig. There were two other guys that used to come by motorcycle but they showed up in cars and kept saying I was going to get wet. I got home, put the motor cycle in the garage, and jsut as I got to the house it started raining. |

Just wondering, do they charge you the same way they charge for text messages via phone? If they do, I'm not sure if you're charged to send text messages or just by what's received. Never used that feature enough (or cared enough) to figure it out. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I'm on Verizon, my friends and family are not. We're still on the smallest number of minutes per month (grandfathered in because they don't offer that few anymore) and don't even come close to using them up monthly. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I probably had some spam on my tracfone, but since I very rarely use it, I had no clue. When my daughter msg'd me back, I saw I had 38 msgs. I guess what I thought were beeps telling me the phone was completely charged were actually msg beeps. Who knew! I erased them all without looking. ![]() nb -- vi --the heart of evil! I have a cheap plan that gives me 55 minutes per month, basically for emergencies. They keep offering me deals on plans that offer a lot more.... and cost a lot more. In a busy cell phone month I might use 5 minutes of my time. |

I take the dog for a nice long walk in the woods almost every day and figure that it would be courteous to give one last call to let them know where to ind my corpse. I also try to remember to take it when I go bicycling. You never know when there is going to be a mechanical breakdown and I might need a lift. I urge my wife to take it once in a while but she is not interested. |

We were unable to figure out where he wanted directions from. Unfortunately some people don't consider what the proper tool might be. A "Stuck in traffic, will be 10 minutes late" text is helpful and a timesaver. But trying to describe something in text messages that can be solved with a 2 minute call is a waste of everyone's time. |

When it's a vague request like that, they usually just want the cross streets; not turn by turn directions. I'm surprised he didn't use the GPS navigation part of his smartphone to get directions... or google maps at the very least. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

Our problem on Friday was a furniture truck (I didn't notice if they were delivering or someone was moving - but no matter what, they shouldn't have been there at that time of day) that blocked a lane of traffic on a main thoroughfare during rush hour. It literally doubled the time it should have taken to cross town. Where's a cop when you need one? -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I don't have texting and never will because it is cheaper to pay by the message when you send one or two a month. |
