I think he did! He doesn't live near the city anymore.

As the article points out, unless you're really familiar with mushrooms
don't pick them and try to eat them. There was a movie filmed back around
1971, 'The Beguiled'. Clint Eastwood in one of his earliest roles, as a
wounded Yankee soldier during the Civil War. He was found by the
inhabitants at an all girl's private school and they nursed him back to
health. He seduced every one of them, one way or another. When they found
out about his treachery they served him a special dish for supper... sauteed
poisonous mushrooms. LOL That was a fun film!

Do you eat any of them? The only ones I know for sure are Chantrelles,
and maybe one other from when I was much younger! I think they are
interesting- we get at least 8 varieties in my yard. One type is so
tiny you really have to be looking to notice...

I had these strange fungi growing under trees that looks like pink
fingers coming up through the soil. I have never seen them before,
and I have seen them growing on other people's property this summer, too.

Hey, thanks! I tried to find out what they were using mushroom
id websites but no luck.

Cool, Dog Stinkhorns go nicely with the Dog Vomit fungus that
grows in my mulch. (laugh)

I hear ya! I truly believe that's how [hu]man figured out what to eat.
Watching the critters. If they won't eat it, neither will I.

Everything I've read about foraging for wild mushrooms says to eat
only a small part of a specimen even if it's IDed as a safe type,
because mushrooms tend to mimic each other. Since I see no point in
taking a chance for just one small taste I eat only cultivated
mushrooms. Several of my neighbors claimed that the giant puffball is
quite edible so I told them they could have it, but no one took any of
it... it's still there now very decayed. When I see a giant mushroom
without so much as a nibble from any critter, not even an insect, I am
not going to be first.

There are *old* mushroom hunters and *bold* mushroom hunters. But
there are no old *and* bold mushroom hunters.

Some critters are apparently immune to the toxins in some deadly
mushrooms.

Identifying the mushroom is the only surefire way to see tomorrow.

Even the most experienced mycologists sometimes get it wrong...
mushrooms are great mimics, and at different growth stages the
deadliest can look like the safest.

Doesn't it look like something scary was buried under my tree and

I gotta say that's the biggest patch of them I've ever seen. Usually
there will be 3-4 clumps of 2-3 spread over that size area.

Is that bagged mulch under the tree? That's what seems to hold the
spores of the ones I've seen on my property.

This is the first year I ordered bagged mulch, yes. I used it
all over but that's the only place those came up. Must be the
sun/shade condition or whatever because when I saw them at other
people's place this year it was always under a tree.

I also got the usual dog vomit fungus. I generally get some of
that on mulch I have delivered from whatever local place. I thought
I'd have less problem with the bagged, labeled as composted mulch.

Well, that's a start, anyway. Be aware that it doesn't work the other
way, though. Just because an animal, even a closely related one, is
eating something, that doesn't mean humans can. Deer often eat poison
oak:
