Default Who Has a Picnic Basket?

(There, I just deleted a references line. I wonder if this messes
up anyone's newreader behavior. Let me know.)

I have never owned a picnic basket, nor do I think I have ever seen
one other than in movies. The image of a picnic basket seems highly
retro to me, I suppose that means they must be popular.

I have seen them around and online. Someone bought my mom one as a gift.
Don't think she ever used it.

I see them for sale occasionally, but don't know anyone owns one. I
haven't seen on since they stopped making portable coolers out of metal.

Oh, come on, Dave! There are high end picnic baskets that are lined
and come equipped with utensils.

I have two picnic baskets. One is the old fashioned woven type. Yes, it's
lined and came with 4 melamine plates, utensils and cups. I've used it to
picnic with cold fried chicken and fixin's, but not for a long time.

The other I bought about 6 years ago. It looks more like a small suitcase
on wheels than a picnic basket. It even has a pull-out handle like a
suitcase! The back of it unzips to reveal strapped-in plates (they feel
more like Corelle dishes than melamine), metal utensils and plastic wine
glasses. There's even a drawstring pouch on the side for holding a bottle
of wine That one I've only used twice... strictly bread & cheeses to
snack on rather than a full-on picnic. It's cute but it doesn't hold very
much.

Oh come on what? I said that I have seen them for sale.

Yes, they tend to be high end. I have not seen anyone use one in years.
Lightweight coolers have pretty well replaced them.

Check out www.picnictime.com. Every style of basket and carried on the
planet. I really like this one

I have an old woven English one but I do not use it for picnics...too bulky.

Coolers are better. We had a nice basket with all the typical
accessories but never used it so we gave it to one of the kids.
They're cute martha stewart things but not very useful.

Thank you. Once again a voice of reason and reality outshines SF
negative and argumentative nature.

When I was a kid, coolers were heavy and they were expensive. People had
picnic hampers because people liked to picnic. If you went off for a
Sunday drive there were no restaurants open. Most people did not buy
special dishes for picnics. They used old china or enamel. Then plastic
came along.

They are still available. My son received one as a wedding gift a
couple of years ago. One couple in their circle always gives them as
wedding gifts.

Environmental Liquid membrane System (ELMS) is a USDA certified biological soy polymer membrane. It is completely water proof so it could be used in areas of buildings where there may be pooling of water.

I guess I have the market on picnic baskets. I own 3 of the old style that are woven - my grandmothers, my mothers and mine. I also have my grandmothers pie basket. Woven like a picnic basket, only square, has a wood shelf with legs to carry two pies. I bought a woven picnic basket at a yard sale and filled with all the necessary items...dishes, utensils, napkins, etc for my daughter as she wanted a woven picnic basket. My daughter in laws are more inclined to modern styles, so I bought them the new style....like a mini-cooler on wheels.

I guess it would depend where you live, your activities, if you have or use a picnic basket anymore.

My wife is very attached to her picnic basket. She just said, "Let's
take our picnic basket to the beach."
