LOL! No worries. We actually live below our means but that's
deliberate. Like, I bought the house at only 1/2 of what we qualified
for but we wanted to be sure we'd not be pinched too much and lose it.
Took a fixed loan at a low rate and rode out all the mess where others
who took balloon payments got hit (still ongoing).

I could upscale now but if the spiffy job I have falters, I'd be in
trouble. My retirement income and disability income plus Don's
retirement and shortly social security for him, are enough to live off
here if we are reasonably careful.

Cats probably can add to the life of someone who can't attract normal
relationships with humans. I suspect 60 seconds in a room with you or
I would bring him to tears and cause him to soil himself.

Pets are incredible. They endure pain without expressing it.
Maybe it's not because they're noble, maybe it's because they don't
know how. They go deaf, they have tooth aches, they have stomach
aches, yet they can't go to the doctor or call up the help line. They
just endure. But they're lucky they're pets. People complain about
the natural habitat of cats or dogs being lost, yet in reality those
animals are probably better off as pets. In truth, all animals other
than humans (thus far), have no real reason to stick around unless
they serve some sort of purpose, such as being a pet or a source of
food.

I'm glad you didn't get defensive with my comments about your
'absenteeism'. But it's true, of course there is more chance of
something going wrong the more people are involved. I'm a renter, but
I've never rented a home, only apartments, and single ones at that.
Good enough for me. When I was younger, in my 20s, looking back now,
I know that I would have been one of those nightmare tenants people
who rent homes to complain about. I would have made your japanese
lady and her friends look like a walk in the park. But I'm older
now. I guess if you're going to rent, it's who you rent to that
counts. Same thing when you hire someone (something I've never been
in a position to do and don't ever want to be), it's who you hire that
counts. If you hire the wrong people, you're going to find out that
firing people is an ugly job.

As for the fixer-upper thing, I will admit now that I'm a lazy
son of a bitch who never learned how to fix things because deep down
for some reason I always assumed that I'd be rich by the time I was
21. I didn't know how it would happen, I just assumed. I'm the kind
of person who looks at the light switch and doesn't want to see what's
behind the wall. I don't like seeing things get built or fixed or
painted. I want to leave, then when I come back I want to see it just
the way I want it. But I am not against the fixer-uppers. In fact, I
respect them for their talents.

Give me a million dollars, I won't turn it down. But I swear to
God, all I need is a roof over my head and enough money food and other
necessities, and that's good enough for me. When I turn 65 (14 months
away) - if I'm still alive - I will be getting age-related SSI checks
for $675 a month, plus maybe food stamps. That to me is like heaven,
not having to work and just lying around doing nothing, or something
if I so choose.
