For what little I use a cellphone anywho, it's just not worth the extra cost(s). Uhm, what does an iPad do that a run-of-the-mill computer/laptop (PC?) doesn't? On the downside it has no keyboard, and may not run your favorite software, or may only do so at extra cost. That's probably about it. When it was introduced I read that, bizarrely, the iPad does not have a mode where it simply functions as a normal cell phone. Perhaps this has been fixed. Steve |

The iPad does have a microphone and can make calls through the Internet. The iPhone can do almost everything an iPad can but to small for comfortable reading. One can sync their Mac, iPhone and iPad wirelessly and automatically using the cloud. I am typing this from my iPad. I will never own a laptop again. Ten hour battery life, easier to hold to view books and magazines, On this iPad, eBook reader, my GPS guide, my contact list, weather alert, night star guide, Internet radio of twenty thousand stations. Graphing Calculator that blows my TI 89 out. I can watch movies and TV shows on it, my TV remote control, Sketch pad, turn my lights thermostat up/down, Drawing pad for main computer, iPod that runs my Bluetooth speakers. Photo Viewer, Calendar, Journal keeper, keep track of diet and blood pressure, I can watch YouTube and most import of all I have access to thousands of cooking recipes and cooking information at my fingertips. As for magazines, I already read two magazines online. They do not need Apples subscription service. I receive a monthly email and go to the magazines site and download the magazine in PDF form. However with the iPad, interactive magazines which will be the future and better than PDF's will need Apples help. I will take iTunes over the music and book stores and soon the magazine stores. Book stores are the way of the music stores... History. MY local Borders is even closing so that makes Barnes and Noble the closet and thirty miles away. Paper is going the way of the Dodo bird. Since I bought my iPad eight months ago, I have not used my printer once! Paper is history, I read everything on this iPad. Also the iPad is the number one game machine also. Rumor has it the next Apple Operating system for the Mac will be like the IPad with the Push technology as well as Multitasking. There is one MAJOR drawback and it is a big one. With so much personal information in an all in one compact device. It does help big brother to keep track of you also, if he wishes. Privacy is also going the way of the Dodo. -- Enjoy Life... My assumption is that these hand-held devices are the computers of the future. The performance of the iPad is startling if you consider the low power consumption and battery life. As you say boot-up is remarkably fast. I guess that's what comes from close integration of hardware and software and not being saddled with DOS legacy issues. I like my laptop just fine but boot-up is slow and it's a power hog and it requires a small fan to keep the CPU from overheating and shutting down. The iPad keeps it's cool passively and barely gets warm. Remarkable! OTOH, Apple is as evil an empire as is Microsoft. A pox on both of their houses - I can't wait until something better comes along. :-) > > When it was introduced I read that, bizarrely, the iPad does not have a > mode where it simply functions as a normal cell phone. The guy makes Bill Gates look like Mother Teresa. After all the dedicated Mac users we keep hearing from, I thought I'd be a lot happier with the little Shuffle I bought. What a pain in the neck with the way I had to load songs onto it, interpreting the lights, the minimalist documentation. Long before it's time I got the dreaded flashing orange light that seems to mean Kiss your $70 goodbye. I got myself a Sansa Clip and found out what I was missing. $40 and I can just drag albums onto it instantly without iTunes and it has a bunch of other functions, and a display. I plan for that to be my last dip into the Apple pond. nancy |

How far do you have to drive to the nearest music store for CD's? Apple almost has a monopoly on the download music like Amazon with books. Even though I have never had a problem does not mean others do. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1407 I have not bought a CD in Eight years, a waist of money. Why spend $15 for one or two good songs when I can just down load the songs I want for a dollar on two. For Christmas I give I tunes gift cards to my nephews and nieces. They immediately use my computer to download and burn their own custom CD's. Their taste in music is close to mine, alternative music. I have about 70 Gigs worth of music on my hard drive and all backed up on external drives. Now with your MP3 I take it you do not download music from the Internet? If not that is major reason why iPods rule, can download music directly into some iPods, iPhones and iPads from the Internet. -- Enjoy Life... Nad R (Garden in zone 5a Michigan) |

What is to keep in mind is that there was a progression of iPod and really, the shuffle is not meant as a person's SOLE ipod. By the time the shuffle came out, there had been multiple flavors of iPods for quite a while. The mission of Apple was not how to sell someone an iPod (they had already succeeded in that), but how to sell them ANOTHER iPod. So what we started seeing was narrow-mission iPods, iPods with different storage and form factors for different reasons. If i don't want a full size iPod to take to the gym, i could get a mini... or a nano. If i wanted video and touch, i get the iPod Touch. Then the shuffle for just a sampling of songs for a gym trip or a bicycle trip, etc. The feature of shuffling in music from itunes so that you can just fill it up with a bunch of songs is indicative of how "they" expect you to use it. So there's a built-in momentum here. If you already had 1 or 2 iPods, your musical library is already established with iTunes, and you decided to get a shuffle, it really becomes a relatively painless (theoretically) effort to hook your new shuffle in and load it up with the songs you already like. The interface is ok, i suppose. Certainly it's usable if not great, but given the focus on form (size/weight), that's what they came up with. Notable is that the previous gen of the shuffle was seemingly a failure which is why this newest one somewhat reverts to 2gen ago shuffle. And then the newest Nano now looks like a slightly bigger shuffle with touch screen. This is a nice interface, but there's a tradeoff in that the size difference is noticeable, especially if you are doing alot of movement while having it clipped on. I'm surprised that your shuffle died on you so quickly; that might be a Q/A issue. btw, I really hate iTunes, also. It's a pain, slow, wtf is "determining gapless playback"?!, hate the prompts (What exactly does clicking "don't ask me again" do, since i get asked again each time anyway?). BUt overall I have really enjoyed using my iPods. But if you are happy with what you have now, that's quite excellent, too! -goro- |

In my Windoze > machines, I get ~25sec boot to XP, and 30sec to Win7 (~15sec excluding > the time for my liquid cooling system to start up). Ha ha, forget about that liquid cooling system in the new frontier. I put together a computer with a Intel Atom processor which has a small fan that looks like a toy - that computer is kind of slow and it has a Linux OS, which I thought would work well with the Atom. It's sitting under my desk unused. Hopefully, I'll be able to load in an Android OS soon. OTOH, the iPad with a super low wattage processor and a OS that is well suited for the A4 processor and environment works like a dream. My newest computer has a low-end AMD Quad processor of 120 W or so. I bought the biggest, lowest priced cooler for that and it's a monster. I'm guessing the noise from that thing is gonna be "a little loud." All the mounting pins for the front panel snapped off in shipping so I'm trying to figure out how to install it. If I can't think of anything, I'm just going to duct tape it. :-) > >>> >>> SSD technology is helping mobile computing leap forwards very quickly. >> >> This is true - the new frontier shouldn't be using technology using >> spinning platters like a record player. :-) > > Platter HDs are likely to stay around for a long time. It just seemed like here I just want something to play tunes so I can walk (dang my feet gain 10 pounds each if I don't have music to walk to) and all of a sudden I'm loading iTunes onto my pc and being asked a million things I don't understand ... afraid to say Don't ask me this again? (laugh) I didn't like that experience of being hooked into something like that. And when I got the Sansa and found it did everything the shuffle did and more, only way easier, it was a breath of fresh air for me. Operating phrase being 'for me' as I'm happy you like your iPods and I have no quarrel with that. nancy |

Does the clip have headphones that plug in? Does your car have a 1/8 stereo plug for the radio? A lot of newer cars & stereos have auxiliary plugs. That's how my wife plays her Fuze in her Focus.
