Default A bicycle ride and a nice cheap lunch

I had an interesting lunch experience the other day. Against my better
judgment, I invited my wife to come along on a bicycle ride along a old
rail line converted to bike trail. I had previously sworn not to take
her on any more rides because she is afraid of traffic slows me down and
severely reduces the length of my rides, and he often ends up falling
and injuring herself. However, I have to say that she did well. She kept
up all the way, didn't complain and didn't hurt herself.

The destination was a nice little town, a hidden little gem that even
people who live in the area don't know about. Unfortunately, the main
street was all torn up for construction and it was noisy and dusty from
all the work going on. We opted not to eat at one of the outdoor venues
and went instead to a little mom and pop operation that offered an all
day breakfast.

I don't know what the rest of you would expect to pay for a hamburger in
a place like that, but I though that $3.75 sounded pretty cheap. It's a
lot less than the places around here charge. So I ordered one, and being
really thirsty after a long ride, ordered a Coke. The waitress asked me
if I wanted the daily special, hamburger, fries and drink for $5.75.
Figuring that a large drink would be $1.50 or more, the fries were
practically free. My wife ordered the pea meal bacon and eggs (poached),
but didn't want the home fries or toast.

Our lunch seemed to be taking a long time. Thank goodness we were not in
a hurry. It wasn't like the place was busy. There was only one other
table occupied. When my burger and fries came I was impressed with the
size. The burger was huge and obviously freshly made, not pre-made and
frozen. There was a huge pile of fresh cut fries.

My wife's order came with three huge pieces of peameal bacon and two
poached eggs. I think they may have given her an extra piece of bacon
because she didn't want the fries or toast. Total bill for a hamburg
platter, large drink, peameal and eggs and coffee.... $14.

Y'all had a really nice riding adventure You're lucky to have a(ny)
converted rails-to-trails to ride along - none close by my neck of the
woods! It's (nearly) always fun to take a long ride on a beautiful day
and stop for a snack, meal, and/or beverages somewhere along or close to
the trail ;>

Where was the rails to trail? In Pittsburgh there are a large number
of rtt, and they run real close to places to eat. The city has a
casino which has free coke or coffee.

We have the Katy Trail here in Missouri:

http://www.bikekatytrail.com/

I've ridden in once, but as it's not terribly close to my house I
don't ride it very often. I'm not much of a "throw bike in car and
drive to someplace to ride a bicycle" person. I ride a lot for
utility. Like I'm going to ride to the hospital later for my clinical
preceptorship, and I ride to grocery shop, etc. And I can easily ride
to Bryan/Food Snob's house too.

Shows that you CAN enjoy a bike ride with your wife! Maybe she's
learning.

Sounds very nice (and Canadian too, I assume, with pea meal bacon!).
I like mom and pop places, especially when they make everything fresh.

And at a fast food dump, you'd pay about the same for crap-n-gimmicks. Kudos on a fine day of biking. I'm very thankful for RTT, as we have oodles of them going through Amish country and the like. Great idea.

I don't do fast food unless I am really. really desperate. Thank
goodness I have not been that desperate for a long time.

I had passed through this little town many times when I was working and
had always thought that it would be a nice place to visit and spend some
time. A friend of mine had been telling me about being out on a
motorcycle run and stopping at a place in that town where he had a
similar deal, though he thought his a bargain at $6.95. I guess we had
gone to a different place.
FWIW, this was in Ridgeway Ontario, and that little corner of the
world, Ridgeway, Port Colborne and Fort Erie, is well known locally for
decent food cheap.
