Default New player in the SoCal grocery market

While I was driving thru Pasadena, CA, the other day, I noticed a new
grocery store taking over a former Circuit City location (northwest
corner of Rosemead & Colorado). The name of the chain is Sprouts.
Apparently they are now moving into SoCal. One store has opened in
Culver City, and another is opening in Valencia. From what I read on
the web page, it looks like another version of Whole Foods.

I'd like to know more. Are the prices and quality equal to or better
than WP; how does this chain compare to TJ's & Fresh & Easy, etc.,
etc.

Thanks

We got a Sprouts here in Claremont 2 years ago, corner of Mountain and
Foothill. I was very excited when they opened but am pretty thoroughly
disappointed. Pricing is not great, selection is limited, meats are OK,
produce is average, cheeses are priced outrageously. Big selection of bulk
goods and a huge section for dietary supplements. I rarely shop there.

Overall they are just very average. Nothing special. It is by no means
anything remotely like Whole Foods.

Sprouts has been in Denver a year or so. All the branches seem to be
doing well here. It is very similar to Henry's/Boney's in So. Cal.
The same family started both, IIRC.

Henry's is not very exciting, unless your only other choices are Von's
and Ralph's.

In SoCal I like the Stater Bros.

I didn't like the Stater Bros. that replaced Alberston's in S.D. County.

Henry's/Sprouts is more like a farmer's market and has equivalent and
cheaper produce than our supermarkets. (We're in Denver where nearly
all produce is imported from CA anyway.)

IMHO, Stater Bros has gone downhill. I find the one nearest me (La Paz
and Oso in Laguna Niguel) to have all the ambiance of a soup kitchen.
It's poorly stocked and badly lighted. Stater Bros. built its
reputation on its meat department and that was the *only* reason I
ever went in Stater Bros. in the first place. The last two times I
bought meat there, the baby back ribs were dried out looking in the
case (bought 'em anyway, figuring 2 1/2 hours in the oven wrapped in
foil ought to fix that) and the rib eye steaks I bought both had
streaks of gristle in them that could have been used to tie an
aircraft carrier to the dock. I am done with Stater Bros. Gelson's
meat is a bit pricier, but it's a lot more reliable, you ask me.

They've been in Torrance for quite awhile. Better prices than WF,
broader selection than TJs.

And they had some of the biggest and best shallots I have ever bought!

Same here in Santa Clarita - they have taken over a closed Mervyn's. I think
the sub title is "Farmers Market" on their sign.

We do have 2 great Latino markets here Tres Sierras & Vallarta. IMHO their
produce in better then the big box stupidmarkets.

I like Sprouts better than Whole Foods or Sunflower Farmers Market
here in Colorado.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the info on their bread.

I've never been in a Whole Foods even though there are many around.
Unfortunately not in the area of town I live in. One of these days
I wander in to one... one of these days. :-)
