I'll be in El Lay (Century City, to be exact) from June 22 (pm) to 27
(am) at the American Headache Society meeting. I won't have a car. The SO will be at home with the bums, alas. I'll be occupied most of the days, but Tuesday and Saturday nights are free. Any So Cal RFC'ers who might be available for dinner in the neighborhood, or who might know of decent relatively inexpensive food in the Century City/Westwood/Beverly Hills (yeah, right) area, give me a shout via email. I've never been there, but I've heard that the Renaissance Restaurant at Scientology's Celebrity Centre is very good. You don't have to be a cult member to eat there. The Sunday brunch buffet is said to be a very good value. If they offer you a "tour" of the building, politely refuse. It's actually the "orientation" video they use to recruit new members, not a tour of their interesting building. Also skip the "stress test" and the "personality test", unless you've really got time to kill. And don't give them your address unless you like receiving pseudo-religious junk mail. |

One of the drug companies is hosting a dinner at Craft on Wednesday night. I am tempted to go, even though I'm the last person they'd want to hear their spiel (I can't prescribe their drug). Either way, I could go >for it. Thanks for the suggestion, Tammy. Sounds intriguing, I wish I had known about it when I was stuck in Century City back in January. It looks to be about 3.5 miles away. (So, taxi-able.) There is a sanitized Mexican place in Century Plaza called Pink Taco (a chain I think). Not necessarily worth seeking out but the fish burrito was pretty good. That's about all that's within walking distance. Also in Century Plaza is a specialty olive oil store, and a grocery store, Gelson's. I mostly ate food I bought at the Gelson's when I was there. You should be okay, in a sense, because as you exit the Hyatt, if you walk immediately left along the front of the building, you end up on a sidewalk and at an intersection that you may cross (this is very important) on a walk signal. From there, go left on the opposing sidewalk until you see stairs and ramps leading up to Westfield Century Plaza. Gelson's is on the extreme left on the near side, Pink Taco on the upper left on the far side. There was one other place to dine in there, a wine bar with substantial snacks, that looked vaguely possible. And perhaps some of the Macy's-type stores have food courts inside. It's limited. I took a walk north of Santa Monica (I think it's Santa Monica, could be wrong), into hilly neighborhoods. It was nice to see a bit of L.A. I had wished to take a free evening and some taxi fare and go the six miles to Echo Curio to hear some indie music, but I never made it there. Steve |

It's "contemporary American" food of a reportedly very high level (we haven't been there ourselves). LA Times food critic gives it 3 stars. Average meal ticket is over $50. -aem |

I just remembered, our last stay in Century City, we had dinner at the Gulfstream on Santa Monica Blvd. at Avenue of the Stars It's part of the Hillstone chain, but we were impressed. I'd been to the one in Newport Beach and *wasn't* impressed, so expect that the manager(s) have a hand in the difference. Waitstaff had been to smile school on steroids and the food was excellent. And be sure to grab a bite at the first (goodlooking) taco truck you see. Some of them are really, really good. > >Here's hoping it's a little warmer in LA next week. A little farther south, the Santa Ana city council has been trying to ban those hand cart vendors for years - the ones peddling Mexican ices and the like. Personally, I think they add a nice touch of color, along with the ladies and their umbrellas and the quincinera and caballero shops (which they city council will likely go after next in their eternal pursuit of turning SA into something less "ethnic," the dumb *sses).
