I think Spumoni Gardens is in Bensonhurst! Love that restaurant!

I like to get my fish in Chinatown. My favorite shop is the one on Canal
Street right where it splits. One side of the street has this great bakery
and the other side is the huge fish market. It's a little intimidating.
You have to really speak up and push to the front to get what you want.
Also, you have to know what you want because answers to questions don't
come too easily there. I usually point and hope for the best. I'm rarely
disappointed. The prices are fantastic and the fish is beautifully fresh.

Brooklyn has some really large fruit markets. I know there was one I used
to pass all the time in Midwood near my inlaws, and I'm sure there are some
near you, but if you're in the city, Union Square Farmer's Market is great,
and if you head uptown, you can't beat the selection and price and quality
at Fairway!

You live in the food capital of the world.

>I think Spumoni Gardens is in Bensonhurst! Love that restaurant!

Oboy, L&B is the best.
http://www.spumonigardens.com/photos.asp

Go to Brighten Beach; walk under the el and eat authentic Russian fare till you
bust... don't forget to bring home a couple dozen Mrs. Stahls K'nishes.

For *fresh* fish wait until the boats come in at Sheepshead Bay... while
waiting slurp a few dozen little necks on the half shell with sudz on tap...
brrrrrrp! For Italian bakerys, butchers, and delis better than Italy, go to
Avenue U between West 8th and West 12th... much better than Manhattan's Little
Italy. For fresh fruit n' veggies, the Korean produce stands along the East
side of Kings Highway or right in your back yard, the produce stands under the
el along 86th Street. In Brooklyn you can't walk five minutes without coming
to a fabulous foodie fantasia.

Tatianas (spelling ,) is excellent if you want real authentic Russian
food. Rasputin is so so. I thought the best Italian places are in 18th
Ave.? Gotta check Ave U.

As for fresh veggies, those veggie places open 24 hours at Fort Hamilton
and 63? 64 street are very good. However, I buy most veggies at the
Koreans here in the Hackensack area.

I do get invited to the many restaurants in the vicinity: Mambo Italiano
is where we hold our yearly (and wild I might add,) X-mas party. India
passage is a common for the Brooklyn Chapter of the Johnny Walker
society (it doesn't really exist, but we have dubbed it that way,) there
is a fantastic Lebanese or Syrian on 4th or 5th Ave. in a corner.

Yes, Brooklyn does feature fantastic and eclectic cuisine.

Of course, working in a Glatt Kosher institution, I get my weekly
infusion of Glatt Kosher pizza, chicken, and falafels : )

It's been a few years (6) since I lived in NY, but you MUST check out
Zabar's! (Upper West Side)

Oh, and Ray's Famous Pizza. (Upper East Side)

Second Avenue Deli, Katz, and Ratner's.

And the best hot dogs in the universe - Sabrette, found on virtually
every street corner! Have one with mustard, kraut and onions, a knish
with mustard, and a Yoo Hoo....it's a lunch fit for a king! )

Don't know if it's still there, but on 25th and Second Ave was a little
Mexican place we always used to go to - Mexico Lindo.

H&H Bagles - the best anywhere.

Nathan's Famous dogs and fries...not to mention their shrimp boats.

I wonder if Carmine's is still at the South Street Seaport - they had
wonderful seafood.

I MISS NY!!!!

one of them, anyway

there's any number of good to very good places open in Brooklyn

Someone mentioned Fairway in Manhattan too.

One of my favorite apples, the Stayman Winesap, I get at one
of the Brooklyn Greenmarkets, and rarely anywhere else.

Sometimes the vendors at these (the Greenmarkets) can tell
you where the item you want is sold, if they don't have it there.

The only boysenberry preserve I've found yet in the city is Kedem,
available in the big market in Williamsburg and at least one
in Boro Park.

Yes, but you've got to be very, very picky. The other poster
who mentioned a spot in Chinatown was right about that one. It's QUITE
good, and there are a few other places that always have a good
selection. But the phrase "buyer beware" applies doubly in Chinatown,
because even the best shops will try to move bad stuff on the
unsuspecting. I'm not trying to cast aspersions, but that's the deal
there. Just be picky, and you can indeed get some great fish bargains.

A block west and a block south of D&D is Gourmet Garage, which
occasionally has a decent selection. There's also a GG on Seventh
Avenue where it meets Christopher. It's ok. Whole Foods on 24th and
7th is much more reasonable and often much better. Fairway has a
bigger selection quite often, and the prices are roughly the same as
Whole Foods, but sometimes there are great bargains. And if you go a
block north on Broadway (check it, I think it's 73rd?) there's
Citarella's, which has a very nice fish selection at reasonable
prices. You're more assured of consistent quality than Chinatown, but
you'll get the better values sometimes in Chinatown. It depends on
your needs as well.

The Union Square Greenmarket (check web site for schedules)
can be awesome at times. Depends on season and which vendors show up,
but the produce can be terrific, as well as the prices.

Good luck! DGI

I do most of my food shopping at the Union Sq Greenmarket. THat
includes fish and bivalves except from Jan to Mar. Wild mushrooms, all
kinds of produce: hot peppers, herbs, tomatoes. Lamb, bison, pork,
great poultry. . . .The best garlic I know of. I could rave on and on.

For artisanal dried pasta, drawn through old bronze die, I go to
Buonitalia in th eChelsea Market. between 15 and 16 St and between 9
and 10 Ave. They also have marvelous white anchovies, guanciale, and
other Italian specialty items.

ALso in Chelsea Market, the Lobster Place is a good fish market.

There is a CItarella on 6th Ave, between 9th and 10th sts. Good fish
and other stuff. Where Balducci's used to be.

The three Garden of Eden stores have lots of good stuff in them. One
is on W. 23d St, one at 7 East 14th St, and one on 3d Ave. I think
they may have a store in Brooklyn Heights also.

You live in the food capital of the world.

I know there was one I used
to pass all the time in Midwood near my inlaws, and I'm sure there are some
near you, but if you're in the city, Union Square Farmer's Market is great,
and if you head uptown, you can't beat the selection and price and quality
at Fairway!
