Can anyone tell me who can possible keep up with all the posts in this NG? I
just noticed that there are 18,777 unread messages just waiting for me. Do
you think I'm missing something good? :-(

You have to skim the subject lines and toss most of them. If a subject
catches your eye, take a peek and maybe join in. Most of us just cannot
devote the time to read more than 25% of them.

Only those with no life read every post.... only ones worse off are those who
participate in every thread... they're mentally ill. If you read 20% of the
posts you won't be missing anything worthwhile... and just because you open a
post that doesn't mean you have to read the entire post... I can tell by the
first ten words whether it's worth my time continuing. And some people's posts
I never read.

Yes. And just wait until it's quiz time. Boy, will you be in trouble.

Yes. You're missing something good. You're also missing something good
by not reading every message on every newsgroup, not reading every book
in the library, not seeing every movie that comes out and not
befriending every person on the planet. Get busy.

Translation: Killfile the people who almost never say anything that
interests you, and don't worry about the rare time they might say
something that does. Read the first post in a thread; make a snap
judgment as to whether the rest will be worthwhile and read it only if
it shows promise.

Probably.

What the man said. Also it helps to build a kill file/filter. If you're not a
seafood fan, f'rinstance, you can program your subject filter to dump all posts
with "fish" or "seafood" in the title.

Certain posters are guaranteed to add no value to *me* (not saying they don't
for others) so I filter out their messages too.

Dunno what newsreader you're using but if you dip into a post and find it of no
value you can simply mark the whole thread as read and refresh your view.

Lastly, I don't know what your newsserver's policy on message retaining is but
if you're showing 18K+ new messages you're probably not checking the group
often enough.

This group averags about 250 msgs a day. Using that number the math works out
to you checking the group 18K/250, or roughly every 4x18 days, once every 10
weeks.

Best,

Marc

It's a daunting task. I'd delete everything except threads
with new posts in the past week and just skim those,
probably reading the sub threads filled with posters I
particularly like to peruse.

Reply only to threads that are NOT dead yet.

I'm confused. (ok, ok, so that's normal) but just joining a usenet
group for the first time, it may have 18K+ posts. So what's the
problem with downloading say 200 headers and marking the rest read?
Then go though 'em and either ignore or follow the threads that are of
interest?

I check several usenet groups daily. RFC is one of the most active but
keeping up with the threads that I want to follow doesn't take a whole
lot of time.

No, it really doesn't. It's so minor.

My question is how do you get rid of the messages u dont want to read, ie
like a whole thread on one subject.

I use killfiles for that, and killfile by subject rather than by author
if I want to have entire threads dissapear.

I use MT newswatcher and it's really easy to do that!

I use it most often for political crossposts. <G>

<snipped and bottom posting as per usenet etiquette>

I don't know what newsgroup (usenet) reader you're using. I use
Netscape (because I'm used to it). It has an "ignore" function which
will eliminate the thread from ever appearing in your list of posts.

I'm not trying to start a war (again) over this but please follow the
usenet etiquette that's been established for more years than anything
with a www in it existed and post on the bottom when replying. You'll
be accepted into usenet groups a lot better.

I see from your headers that you use OE, which allows you to
use filters. Check your OE Help File to find out how to set
up rudimentary filters and if something is particularly hard
to filter, you can find a microsoft ng that can help you
tweek it further.
