What the man said. Also it helps to build a kill file/filter. If you're not a
seafood fan, f'rinstance, you can program your subject filter to dump all posts
with "fish" or "seafood" in the title.
Certain posters are guaranteed to add no value to *me* (not saying they don't
for others) so I filter out their messages too.
Dunno what newsreader you're using but if you dip into a post and find it of no
value you can simply mark the whole thread as read and refresh your view.
Lastly, I don't know what your newsserver's policy on message retaining is but
if you're showing 18K+ new messages you're probably not checking the group
often enough.
This group averags about 250 msgs a day. Using that number the math works out
to you checking the group 18K/250, or roughly every 4x18 days, once every 10
weeks.
