I live and shop in the Chicago near suburbs, and for some reason eggs
have suddenly gone up about 50% in about 10 days. I was shopping in an Aldi discount supermarket today and noticed that the price of a dozen large eggs was $1.35. Two weeks ago the same eggs were 95 cents a dozen. And last week a large drug chain had large eggs at 79 cents a dozen (admittedly a sale price). As I continued shopping I found that large eggs ranged from $1.35 to $1.69 at the several stores I visited. Even Sam's Club, which is pretty competitive had large eggs at $2.54 for a dozen-and-a-half, or $1.69 a dozen. Does anyone know the reason? -Len |

Super-cheap eggs...yum :-\ So, glut is fine with you as long as it results in a saving over the real price of egg production? You are prepared to accept falsified seasonal shortages for the purpose of generating greater wealth for the middle-man in exchange for a product that may not be exportable because of its low production cost and hence questionable quality? Thanksgiving is here - the price of eggs at Walmart almost doubled.

The eggs, in turn, also have to be trucked. The price of tomatoes has also doubled, and there are no more imports in the store than there was when they were "in season". ADM has a history of price fixing to keep feed prices artificially high. They've been busted by the feds and fined plus some execs had to go do time at "Club Fed" penitentiary. Cargill controls the majority of producsers in both the chicken insustry and the poultry/livestock feed industry in Honduras. BTW, check out the websites for Cargill and ADM to see how they are vertically integrated and control everything from the financial institutions that loan money to farmers on up to grain storage, transportation, and production facilities. They even own utilities in some areas. It's rather enlightening. Sandi |

I also noticed that the prices were high. I always buy large eggs and they're usually around $.90 but they were over a dollar recently except at the store that had them on sale. The real reason is the increased demand for high-protein, low-carb foods. Eggs
producers have realized that they can charge more and it won't affect sales. The same reason is behind the price increase in meats. |

Steven,
You assume correctly, I live on Maui. You would be amazed at things here. My husband (45 years old) makes $7.00 an hour at his job. I'm a free-lance computer tech, so my salary varies... I should send you a link to the Maui News Letters to the Editor.....LOTS of people complain there about food and gas prices. Oh, by the way, the price of gas is $2.37 cents a gallon. I've heard there is such a housing shortage in Hawaii that people are literally living in tents on the beaches because there are not enough houses. I noticed the same thing recently and one person at the grocery said it was
supply and demand. She seemed to think that for whatever reason there were less eggs produced. I observed that it is sort of funny how we can spend several dollars on some food item or items we don't even really need but we notice if the price of eggs goes up 30 cents. Winter, the hens "moult" and egg production goes down. I have an organic egg customer that is none to pleased right now as I've been unable to supply him now for the past month. Oh well!
