Why price of eggs skyrocketed?

I live and shop in the Chicago near suburbs, and for some reason eggs
have suddenly gone up about 50% in about 10 days.

I was shopping in an Aldi discount supermarket today and noticed that
the price of a dozen large eggs was $1.35. Two weeks ago the same eggs
were 95 cents a dozen. And last week a large drug chain had large eggs
at 79 cents a dozen (admittedly a sale price).

As I continued shopping I found that large eggs ranged from $1.35 to
$1.69 at the several stores I visited. Even Sam's Club, which is
pretty competitive had large eggs at $2.54 for a dozen-and-a-half, or
$1.69 a dozen.

Does anyone know the reason?

Why price of eggs skyrocketed?

I noticed the same thing recently and one person at the grocery said it was
supply and demand. She seemed to think that for whatever reason there were
less eggs produced. I observed that it is sort of funny how we can spend
several dollars on some food item or items we don't even really need but we
notice if the price of eggs goes up 30 cents.

Kilikini...apologies...where are you? I was assuming Hawaii? This is
very intersting subject that may be off topic to this group, but If
above is true. I'm astounded. I can understand high prices but not
average salary.

This sounds like an environment where people die daily at a high rate.

I'm familier with island living (though no where near as far off coast
as you may be) it sounds like there should be crippled beggars on the
streets like the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Steven,

You assume correctly, I live on Maui. You would be amazed at things here.
My husband (45 years old) makes $7.00 an hour at his job. I'm a free-lance
computer tech, so my salary varies...

I should send you a link to the Maui News Letters to the Editor.....LOTS of
people complain there about food and gas prices. Oh, by the way, the price
of gas is $2.37 cents a gallon.

Don'tcha want to visit PARADISE?

Well, my thoughts on this thansgiving are both with you/Hubby and with
my family.

Yours for good luck in the future under economic circumstances that
would knock me for a loop..and mine for living in Massachusetts (where
the economy stinks...I was unemployed for 9 mnths but have found the
wonders of healthcare employment with my wife), for eggs are $1.20 and
milk is $1.99 for 1%, and gas has dropped to around $1.55 per gal.

Do me a favor...do send me the link...I'm seriously interested, not in
visiting, but in how people deal and stick up for their rights in your area.

Time for a Hawaiian President!

Happy Thanksgiving!

O...M...G!!! I'm soooo glad I don't have to pay prices like that! I just
went to the store today and milk (whole) is $2.37 gal., eggs are $1.19
for 1 1/2 doz., and butter is IIRC $2.79 lb here in Michigan.

Several reasons: 1) reduction in numbers of laying hens because prices
were too low for producers to make money. 2) slaughter of flocks for
meat. 3) increased demand because of low-carb popularity. 4) holiday
season.

Ok, I'll top post since you did. :-)

Winter, the hens "moult" and egg production goes down.

I have an organic egg customer that is none to pleased right now as I've
been unable to supply him now for the past month.

Oh well!

Yes. Sheldon, in an unusually festive mood, has been gleefully

suffice to say that he has skewed demand drastically.

Holidays may not necessarily be the answer. Price of eggs (and
chicken) has gone up here in Honduras also...and there is no tradition
of holiday bake-a-thons like in the US. Perhaps Cargill, ADM, and all
the other agribusinesses involved with feed production have increased
their prices.

I've heard there is such a housing shortage in Hawaii that people are literally
living in tents on the beaches because there are not enough houses. Nice place
to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Why price of eggs skyrocketed?

As more farmers go out of business, the price is most certainly going to go
up to make up for the difference. It is just one certainty we have in
America. ;)

If the price of gas goes up (which it has yet again) then so does the
price of feed since it has to be trucked. The eggs, in turn, also have
to be trucked.

The price of tomatoes has also doubled, and there are no more imports in
the store than there was when they were "in season".

Just my guess. :-)

In my part of New Zealand eggs are around $2.30 or so a dozen, milk is
$1.65 per litre (1 US gallon is around 4.5 litres), butter is $2.20 per
pound.

And chicken feed and cattle fodder and build a barn.

It is not as easy as it sounds.

There are very few barns in New Zealand (where I live). No need.

Pretty much. I'm still astounded by what people pay in Hawaii, but then
consider the cost of freight.

New Zealand is a dairying nation. One of the biggest dairy companies in
the world is based here. We pay the same prices for milk as the export
market does.

ADM has a history of price fixing to keep feed prices artificially
high. They've been busted by the feds and fined plus some execs had to
go do time at "Club Fed" penitentiary. Cargill controls the majority
of producsers in both the chicken insustry and the poultry/livestock
feed industry in Honduras.

BTW, check out the websites for Cargill and ADM to see how they are
vertically integrated and control everything from the financial
institutions that loan money to farmers on up to grain storage,
transportation, and production facilities. They even own utilities in
some areas. It's rather enlightening.

There used to be a woman on one of the poultry e-mail lists that had a
couple of pet hens in a cage in her apartment! :-) No rooster to crow so
they did not bug the neighbors, and she got enough eggs from them for
her own use...

They can be pretty tame if you raise them from chicks.
