Default cultural snack ideas?

Hi
I want my class to do an around-the-world study unit which culminates in a
luncheon. I only have 5 or 6 kids in the class, and an aide. I plan on
asking their parents if they'd like to send something of their culture in.
I have a nice mix of ethnicities. (Hondoran, Peurto Rican, African-American
2nd generation from St. Lucia, African-American with a religious diet,
Polish-German Italian and one South African Indian and Caucasian.)

Do you think I should give some guidelines, or just let them send anything
they want? I don't want all desserts or a bunch of foods that the kids
won't even try (collard greens or gefilte fish come to mind.)

As a Russian Jew, I was thinking of blintzes or Halvah for my contribution,
and maybe some kugel too.

Any ideas? I have plenty of time to plan :-) We'll study cultures other than
those represented in the room, also.

Absolutely, why not ask the parents to only consider things that their own
kids like.

Tim.

If the human brain were simple enough that we could understand it, we would
be so simple that we couldn't.

Did this with Boy Scouts. Broke them up into groups. Assigned each group a
dish....entree, side, dessert, etc. This afforded not TOOOO many of one
type. Each child was given a letter explaining what we were doing and what
assignment they were given (dish)......the rest was up to the parents.
Although all the PA Germans sent in sausage (I didn't know it was German
exclusively as I was told - tongue firmly planted in cheek by me to say 'oh
yeah). It went over well.
Even the snails.
