Default Does Trader Joe's follow Whole Foods?

Today in the paper, Whole Foods announced they were building a store
near where I live (Pittsburgh's North Hills). I noticed when I was
visiting family in Napa that a Trader Joe's was located right next
door to a Whole Foods. Also in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh, a
Whole Foods opened, and then a Trader Joe's. So do you think Trader's
will open near the Whole Foods. I can think of a couple of locations
nearby where they would fit. Of course in PA, Trader Joe's cannot sell
"two buck chuck."

They opened one in Montgomeryville, but I haven't noticed a Whole Foods
either in that shopping center or the one across 309. There might be one in
the same vicinity, but not that I've seen.

Ginny,
Shortly after The WF opened in Wayne, PA on the main line TJ's opened in
Wayne, too, but on the other side near Rt. 202.

I'm hoping what you think is true. One of these days WF will open in
Plymouth Meeting (they've been building it for two and half years). Maybe
TJ's will get on the bandwagon and build one near me. I made the mistake of
going to the Wayne TJ's after work last night, and it took an hour and a
half to get home cause of the traffic. :-(

Where exactly are the WF and TJ's in Wayne? My daughter is at Cabrini and
we may stop in next time we have to do the pick up/drop off thingy....that
is if she doesn't take the train to Lansdale...then I'll do the
Montgomeryville TJ's.

Trader Joe's only goes 250 miles (or less) from their distribution
centers/warehouses. There are TWO Facebook sites dedicated to "Bring
a Trader Joe's to Fargo!" They couldn't sell two buck chuck here
either unless the liquor outlet was totally separate from the grocery
store.

There are only a couple of TJs in NJ that are allowed to carry booze.
The one near me is on the small side, but still well stocked enough
with their nice brand names of oils, vinegars dried fruits, chocolates
and grains to make me happy. They have begun to bring in a lot more
pre-pack produce of prepared foods, which I can do without, but they
sure do have great prices on orchids.

They did in Ann Arbor. When WF moved into bigger quarters, TJ's
came to town and took over their old space.

here in the san gabriel valley section of socal there are only two
whole foods, both of which are in pasadena. the first one is on the
east side of town and the second one (two story's) is in the western
part of pasadena. this second store is a couple of blocks north of
the "original tj's" (which is still open) on arroyo parkway.

the original tj's had a meat department with real butchers at the back
of the store and in the center was a deli counter for fresh
sandwiches. there are now, i believe, 7 tj's in the san gabriel
valley. now that i live in azusa, i'm about 7 miles from the closest
one, one to the east and one to the west. so i now shop at fresh &
easy (which is similar) to tj's in size & type of food stuff carried.
fresh & easy is the brain child of tesco lld, from england, and they
appear to have very, very deep pockets because they have opened about
30 stores in the last 3 years.

Plus there used to be one in Glendale on north Brand.

That's the first one I went to but the original is in South Pasadena.
The one on Arroyo (and California?) was among the first ten in the
chain.

There's a Trader Joe's and a Whole Foods near to my office in
Philadelphia. There's also a TJ's and a WF's near each other in NJ not
too far from where I live, but both are in an area that's out of the way
for me so I rarely go to either of those stores, I just go to the ones
near my office.

These stores appear to go after the same demographic, but there's a lot
that's different about them. WF's prices are much higher, but they have
a greater range of products then TR's so its hard to compare. For
example, WF has fresh seafood and meat departments, but TJs doesn't. TJs
sells mostly its own brands of foods and it does not feature as many
organic foods compared to WF which embraces the idea of selling only
organic stuff.

The opposite is true in San Jose, CA. Near the Blossom Hill Road and the
Almaden Expressway, where Trader Joe's has been for years, a Whole Foods is
scheduled to go in across the street from TJ's sometime in the next year.

I was down in Santa Cruz today. I went into a Rite Aide for
something... Trader Joe's was next door and there wasn't a Whole Foods
in sight.

I love Earth Fare, based in North Carolina. They can give Whole Paycheck
a run for their money. Their prices are reasonable- my favorite
Rembrandt brand aged Gouda is $3/pound *cheaper* at Earthfare than
Kroger!!!
