Default End of season for peaches and nectarines?

All summer long I enjoyed supersweet peaches and nectarines from Wal-
Mart at dirt cheap prices. But the last batch I bought tasted quite
awful. let them ripen for several days, but they never gave off that
sweet aroma. Instead they just got soggyer each day.

Is this typical of the end of the season? Or did I just get unlucky?
