Default How to Bake a Potato

Why are the recommended cooking times anywhere from 350F to 500F?

And why are people poking holes in non-microwaved potatoes?

Foil, of course, is a matter of preference. I sometimes prefer to
butter and salt my potatoes, and the resulting skin.
