Back to Butter.

After a few years of using Benecol (fake butter spread), I finally switched
gears and went back to real unsalted butter!

I decided the flavor, the handful of extra sat. fat. grams and the purity of
real is healthier than the over-processed fake stuff. That combined with how
little I actually used the Benecol (tub is probably 6 months old and about
1/3 full), helped me decide to switch.

Re-hi Land O' Lakes old friend!

IMO, a smart decision. I don't see where replacing a pure food with
something processed can be good. Sure, that fat is not so good but
moderation is the key.

Yep. Mom likes the fake stuff, so I've tried a ton o' different brands.
Canola Harvest is about the best between flavor and cold spreadability, but
I keep a couple cubes of the real deal hidden away. ;)

Ed,

Agreed on all three points.

Something else I never liked about Benecol was that even though it was low
in sodium, there was some other ingredient in it that made it taste way too
salty! I couldn't spread it thinly enough.

G'day Andy,

I've never been able to understand why people in this age who profess
a preference for "organic", "natural", and similar, also seem happy to
eat pseudo-foods manufactured from the cheapest oil (often palm oil)
on the daily market quotes and transported in bulk in rusty steel bins
that probably contained sheep shit (at best) or organochlorides on the
previous voyage.

There is no way that Butter is "healthier" than Benecol, though it IS
MUCH healthier that hydrogenated margarine. I congratulate you on the
switch though. Life is too short to eat crappy tasting things.
Butterfat is delicious.
Margarine is not.

Phred,

Funny, my high school senior project was all about food additives. And
decades later I don't take some of my own advice? :(

Mom raised us on margarine. I never liked it. My friend's Mom used the real
butter. I enjoyed eating her bread and butter sandwiches much more!

As soon as I left home, I switched over to real butter.

Bryan,

Benecol did manage to squeeze their 0.4g of transfat!

Land O' Lakes is sweet cream and natural flavor (that BETTER NOT be MSG or
transfat).

The FDA sucks with their transfat "truth in labeling" requirement!

Canada has to account for all transfats.

I agree. After trying many brands I stumbled onto Canola Harvest and we like
the best of the fake stuff. David will eat it on most anything. I only eat
it melted over veggies. I always have unsalted butter in the freezer and use
it when I have *good* bread to eat. I don't eat bread otherwise. I also
use the butter *in* cooking and baking.

I was raised on marg, too. I think fifty years ago it was the modern
thing to do.

My grandma still used butter, but kept it in the cabinet until it got
rancid. Grew up thinking butter was nasty.

Then I grew up. Even in the rough patches I've spent $4 for butter
rather than 79c for marg.

I pretty much use unsalted butter for everything. I found that zapping a
stick in a microwave oven for five second increments softens it for
spreading too. Usually two to three five second cycles is enough.

Yep. One of the few truly handy uses of a microwave.

Using a vegetable peeler to shave some makes for easy spreading, too.
I usually keep a couple tablespoons at room temp on a small dish,
refrigerating the rest.

Snazzy idea! I will do my best to remember it! Mom always kept a
whole stick (4 ounces) out. I do the same. It gets used fast enough
that it doesn't go rancid.

T,

I'll have to buy a cheap-o butter dish. I have an old crystal one.

A fine excuse to visit Fantés (fantes.com) in South Philadelphia.

Question: Does the butter get ruined somehow after too many heating and
coolings?

Thanks!

DH likes the fake stuff, too. I buy Smart Balance® Light in the tub for
him. After trying many brands, that one is the least disagreeable in
taste. I don't eat bread but I like to make quesadillas and fry them in
butter---*real* sweet butter. I can taste the chemicals in the spreads
which is amazing since I have whacky taste buds.

sf,

I guess it's decent OO. Martini's brand Kalamata extra virgin olive oil
(product of Greece). It tastes good lathered (one-sided) on French bread
coins and then toasted under the broiler.

I probably wouldn't know prize-winning olive oil unless it came sold with a
trophy! :D

l, not -l,

Funny you should mention it. I bought a butter bell (butter keeper) about
two years ago but I think that was during my Benecol days so I never used
it.

I remember there was a long thread here at rfc about them at the time, so I
bought one. Why not. I just can't walk into Fantés and NOT buy something
and I just happened to be in the neighborhood. <VBG>

I'll give it a try. It's still in the box.

Interestingly, I believe the latest studies indicate butter & EVOO are
better for you than the substitutes, from a health standpoint.

The other recent studies seem to indicate, ALL, diet & exercise combinations
work if only we would stay with them.

The simple truth is if calories in are less than calories expended we lose
weight if calories in are more than calories expended we gain weight -
keeping in mind the more we weigh the more calories necessary to move our
bodies.

But muscle burns more calories than fat.

Hence the reason I've gotten back into weight lifting. :-)

It's one real way to increase the metabolism, and I like weight lifting.
It's fun. I just have to watch it with my back issues.

Dimitri

As far as dieting is concerned, I certainly didn't get everything right but I
don't really want to go into it.

Instead, how about we get together and race sometime? :)

That's a good method. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Normally when I zap it the portion is a tablespoon or three. So I have
no experence with heat/re-heat issues.

T,

OK. You said a stick of butter so I guessed it was an over and over thing.

I got it now.

Best,

Andy

see, bobo, the thing is that 'decent human being[s]' don't call for people
to be murdered 'publicly and in a very bloody way, guts too.' this is why
decent people think you're a ****ing head case.

It's possible I've mentioned this here before...

When I was a kid in the 40s we still had stuff called "Table
Margarine" [to distinguish it from the cooking type] here in Oz. It
had the consistency, colour, and flavour of butter -- to the extent
that a sample once won a prize for "butter" in the Nambour
agricultural show in the early 1900s (if I can believe what my father
told me).

The then politically powerful dairy industry objected to this direct
competition and somehow seem to have got Table Margarine permanently
removed from the shopping basket. (Bit like they got the "peanut
butter" of my youth changed to "peanut paste".)

It may not be definitive, but my observation at boarding school was
that Table Margarine could be distinguished from the butter of home by
taking a thin slice off a cold lump. Butter always seemed to shave
off in a continuous slice whereas the marg tended to have very fine
transverse cracks as it peeled off the block.

>To which I add "Amen!" Those are words we should live by.

Indeed, modern margarine is manufactured grease and should be
restricted to use on truck and train axles.

Cheers, Phred.
