Yuck! I remember about 20 years ago, we had a horrible problem with
caterpillars- especially on the little island my mom lives on, Fox
Island. You couldn't walk anywhere outside without stepping on at
least one...

Is that Fox, near Seattle??

If it is, that's a beautiful part of the world.

Not good when you're barefooted :-)

It's just strange that these critters are "unidentified" at the moment.

Yep, I heard about these little critters on the news and I was feeling
pretty safe until I read your article. This little bit dashed all my
feeling of safety "They can travel up to a kilometre in the air”.

Somehow I visualized the caterpillars marching south inch worm style.
By the time they got to Bundy they would be stopped by the mighty
Burnett River. And we, being tied up to a dock on the south shore of
the river, could point and laugh at the caterpillar army as they hung
their creepy caterpillar heads in shame.

Damn, I totally forgot about the cocoon, wings thing.

Yup- Fox Island is about 30 miles south of Seattle, and you are right
about it being beautiful here...
