Cats standing on lemon drops!! :-)

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 09, 2008 08:49 PM, CST

She's doing better, but marginally. They have to find out now which
antibiotic of many is working and remove the others from her IV.

She's doing the ICU psychosis in a grand fashion. She asked me several
times if I brought fresh fruit. I told her she can't have solid food
yet.
She glared at me and told me to get her a pizza.
I told her I couldn't.
She glared again and told me she hated me.

Then she proceeded to tell me about opening the "Great Cat Tomb" where
there were hundreds of cats all standing on lemon drops.

According to her, all six of our cats (we have 3) came over with her
Father from Germany.

She's full of spunk and ready to get the Hell out of there.
I had the opportunity to see her smile several times today. She even
laughed out loud a couple of times.

She's talking almost nonstop. She can have ice at this point and they
were considering Jello later.
One of the last things she said to me was, "I'm gonna get me some damn
food!

Good signs, all good.

Keep the prayers coming.

Samesame :-)

It's the update from her Caringbridge site.

Some people have said that they can't even get in there, so, I put it up
here.

I don't have any problems with the site, but I'd like to thank you for
posting the updates for those who can't otherwise access them.

Those that love her...

Michael is also a gem for _doing_ the updates. I've tried to call
Allen, he's not always answering calls but I keep odd hours.

Yeah, they kept telling me how "demented" my mother was when she was in the
hospital. She wasn't demented before they got their hands on her. She
wasn't demented when she got home, either. They sent scripts for THIRTY
medications home with her. WTF?!

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark!!!! She would have rattled when
she walked!!!

*30* meds??? That's obscene!!

Most of those would have been.... "Oh, you have to take *this one* to
counteract the effects of that one, and then you have to take this one
to counteract the effects of *that one*....... etc, etc!!"

When it comes to meds, I trust my Pharmacist MORE than I trust the
doctor. After all, that's his speciality. :-) He's actually very good,
and he'll talk to me.

It was ridiculous. Her gerontologist had reduced her prescriptions from
nine down to three based on lab work, then in the hospital they ramped her
back up to nine and handed me prescriptions for thirty by the time they sent
her home. It's no wonder she was seeing my dead father walking around the
halls of the hospital and was getting combative with the hospital staff.
The day she did come home they didn't give her meds. Her doctor came to the
house and ticked off all the reasons why she didn't need this, this, this,
that, nor that, nor... basically got her back down to three plus a low dose
(baby) aspirin. Not only was she no longer "demented" she could also eat
spinach and broccoli, which, with the coumadin they had put her back on in
the hospital she wasn't supposed to eat. It was one of the few things I
could get her to eat in the end. I wasn't about to give her a drug that
would limit her food intake even more.

I miss her. She was a very sweet woman.

<snork> My Internest tries to prescribe more stuff for me. I'd be
taking more than the 3 prescriptions I've accepted if I allowed it.

One is allowed to say NO!!!

I only take what I know I need to live. Thyroid meds, (Thyroid Armour),
Propranolol to keep my heart rate normal, and Torsemide, a diuretic as
needed...

Chemistry does not always lead to better living.

hey, Om... i'm going to have my thyroid removed (atypical cells, not
cancer *yet*). is the thyroid armour the one from pig thyroid? i do
not want to get stuck taking synthetics if i don't absolutely have
to.

My Mom was in ICU for almost three weeks before she died and was
convinced they were all trying to kill her. There were other behaviours out
of the norm too. There wasn't much we could do to but try to calm her and
reassure her they were trying to help her. At first she didn't recognise me
and kept asking why I was there. At the end she had a lucid moment and the
last thing I said to her was "I love you, Mom". I hope she really heard
it.....Sharon in Canada

Geezus Sharon. I feel for ya. Losing a parent is bad enough without
that crap. My mom was on a ventilator for the last week of her life.
I'm not convinced she understood anything...

Sometimes the problem is a specific medication.

My stepfather was hospitalized in 2004 with liver failure and internal
bleeding. He was given Ativan to keep him calm, but had what's known as
a "paradoxical" reaction to it: instead of being calmed, he was
agitated, delusional and extremely aggressive, throwing punches at
anyone and everyone who came near him. The hospital in question refused
to use any kind of restraints and instead insisted that a family member
sit at his bedside 24/7 because they didn't have the staff for the job.
They also told us to see about signing a DNR since it appeared he wasn't
long for this world, ie, they presumed the delusional behaviour was
strictly a result of his damaged liver, nothing else, and that he was
going to get worse and worse until he died of a heart attack or something.

His delusions would start up within 30 minutes of being administered the
drug and disappear once it wore off, which suggested to my brother, my
husband and I that perhaps medication was an issue. We found a copy of
the medication textbook on the counter at the nurse's station and read
up on his meds and sure enough, in some patients, Ativan had the effects
we'd seen. We had to insist they stop administering this drug; it didn't
occur to anyone on staff to consider checking into his meds.

They fortunately agreed to stop administering the drug, all delusions
stopped, and stepdad's still alive and kicking four years later.

We're just fortunate that someone left the medication text out in the
open, that we saw it, and were allowed to read it

Thanks for the update, Peter. That's terrific news!

Please put Kili's Caringbridge website in your rfc sig to add context.

Hmmm. I can get to the journal page, and the Guestbook, but for some
reason the link to the photos page doesn't work at the moment. Odd.

I know you also use linux, Cathy. Which browser? I use Seamonkey (mozilla)
and discovered I needed to allow cookies to get other pages like guest book
and photos. Make sure you turn off NoScript, also.

I allow all cookies until I close the session. I got too tired of
allowing separate cases when all I wanted to do was "get there". NS
can be a pain in the *ss too, but I've started temporarily allowing
all of the page. So far, no problems.

Still using Firefox, nb. But it's one of those "sometimes it works, and
sometimes it doesn't" things - and yes I have allowed cookies and have
switched off NS for those pages... Finally got to see them without
changing anything. Dunno, server fart, maybe?

Thanks for posting the update, and thanks to Michael for updating the
CaringBridge site; you two are simply wonderful friends to TFM and Kili.
Fingers crossed Kili continues to improve, and that TFM gets some
rest; I can't imagine what they're going through, and am sending nonstop
healing thoughts and good vibes to them both.

I would say that it's my pleasure, but it isn't.

My wish is that there'd be no need for Kili's KB website, but.....

Which is all we can do. Even though we wish we could somehow do more.

If I lived in the States, I'd gladly give up half my liver (apparently
it's the size of Africa, anyway!!)...... trouble is, Kili would wake up,
tell the nurses to **** off and demand a glass of red wine with her
meals!!
