Default The Shape of Butter Sticks

I hadn't realized there's a regional variation in the
shape of butter sticks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butter#..._butter_sticks

I'd seen the longer Eastern-pack sticks, but I
thought that was just a quirk of one manufacturer.

I didn't realize that's the way it's done in half
the country.

I've only seen the shorty sticks a few times. Mostly
the sticks are long.

Both are always available here in the Phoenix area, shape depending on
manufacturer.

I think it should be a matter of personal preference:
Length or Girth.

I can get both too. I buy Challenge butter (a brand from CA) at the
commissary and they're the short squat sticks. Land O'Lakes butter is
the longer stick.

At the ethnic market chain I shopped on Lung Guyland they sold butter
shaped like a pillow, unfortunately I can't remember the brand, I
think it was the name of a local dairy. It was good butter, I bought
it when it was on sale, double wrapped in heavy crinkly parchment, a
one pound butter pillow. I checked but no butter pictured this week:

I had never seen the short sticks until I went to California.

When I was a kid, we got butter in a one-pound square. The edges were
rounded. I think Breakstone made it. We always had sweet butter. We
never had salted butter. I don't know why.

Around here the major brands are packaged in the short 'cubes'. But we
buy the stuff that comes in one pound blocks anyway.

Here in flyover country, I've only ever seen the Eastern packs....long
sticks. Or a solid block. The covered butter dish that is on my
kitchen table holds an Eastern stick perfectly. The covered butter
dish that goes with my company china holds a (square) 1/4 of a solid
pound perfectly.

There's a cute little trick with a Land O' Lakes butter
carton .... ;-) Hard to describe, though.

What about slim vs. fat. Does that conjure up a stereotype or not?
