You go away for a couple of years and when you check back in to see
how your old rfc buddies are doing, it's like you opened the door to
somebody's nightmare world.

Are recipes germane any more?

Nancy Dooley, Barb Schaller...you guys still around?

I had been part of the newsgroup community for years (new here, but others
more to my profession). Lately, 2-3 years, groups have lost the original
intent of the Usenet of helping others. As newsgroups become more
mainstream, people believe this is their forum to promote their ideas, on
topic and off, it's a new form of hijacking the masses. Many topics are OT
(off topic) and should not be posted in the first place (maybe like this
one). The internet is the wild west of our time, no rules and no over watch
which is good and bad. Because people are not able to control themselves
and are only looking out for their well being and not add to the society or
community they have joined, sheriffs may need to be created to maintain
order. The real problem is people like you, who want to help others will
just go away not helping the others in this community.

I've been posting to ng's since 1990. I was posting here in 92/93.
Actually met my Californian wife here on this very ng. We married in Jan
'94. So that was probably the very first 'Internet marriage' :-)

It started a looooong time before then. I first saw it happening in the
mid 90's. Then it became a real problem with the advent of anonymous
remail sites.
And the more people became aufait with how to hide their real identity,
the more the kooks and stalkers came out of the woodwork.

It's also an avenue for all the kooks and stalkers to 'have a life'.

One that they wouldn't be able to do, or have, or get away with, in real
life.

Not really. If enough like minded people join together, they can oust
the kooks and stalkers.

I used to post to another group (a PTSD group). Cyber stalkers followed
me there and infested it and harrassed everyone that posted there.

I ended up creating an online forum where people from that ng could go
to get away from the stalkers and cyber bullies and discuss things in a
secure and safe atmosphere. You had to log in, and be vetted, to be able
to post to it. You shouldn't have to do that sort of thing, but in un-
moderated groups, it becomes an eventuality.

Or.......... they stick around and get on with the job.

Heh. I don't think so. I've been on the "internet" since 1986, divorced
since 1984 and knew many a "couple" who met online since way before 1994.
And I have been posting to the ng since 1998. I've done my best NOT to
invite crossposting TROLLS which also includes snipping ngs you complain
about, Peter.

I really don't like those oz.whatver trolls but if everyone would ignore
them maybe they'd go away. That includes political posts and Omlet, shut
the hell up about the elections, okay?

If you want to complain about people talking about the elections, either

Newbies. My wife and I met online in 1987, I moved in in 1988 and we have
been together since, twenty years in September.

The first Internet marriage that I am aware of was Cindy Kandolf and
Steinar Haug (1988, IIRC), which happened around the same time as Betty and
I got together. In fact, I remember chatting about that with Cindy on
Bitnet.

It has been a long time since I heard anyone mention Bitnet. I started
using Binet when I was a student, back in 1986. Remember using
computers before Windows?

better. I used to live in a co-op in Edmonton. There were two kinds of
people...the founders and the rabble. I was one of the rabble only
because I came after the founders, although I was on two committees and
my wife (another rabble) was the president. The founders, in their
attitude towards the rights of the rabble to equal treatment were quite
explicit in denouncing what they felt such measures were a betrayal of
their investment and time.

Some people feel that way about newsgroups. Go figure.

Well, actually, one would hope so...otherwise it means that people are
not here to learn, or that they are incapable of learning. So the longer
you've been here (and I've been around since 1991, just for the record),
the more you've absorbed and shared back.

I have changed quite a few things in my cooking, and for the better,
after reading some excellent advice on rfc. If I was only interested in
things other than cooking (as Squidgy has so kindly suggested) I would go
hang out on soc.canada and butt heads with the neo-nazis there.

And also for the record, this group is supposed to be fun, which is why
it's in the rec (for recreational) group of the Big Eight, and not in
clari.biz... or comp.infosystems...

So to all the stiff shirts, I say "Unclench the buttcheeks already and
stop being so frakkin' judgmental of OT postings (unless of course they
are actual trolls, not just things you disagree with)."

It doesn't mean that they are a better person or a better cook. It just
means that they have firsthand experience about the old days. So when
Paul M. Cook posts how much things have changed, and Google shows that
his posting history under that name only goes back two years, then
either he changed his name (which happens a lot) or he doesn't have much
history here.

If you were posting to rfc then, you were probably not the first. Were
you on rfc back in '94. Iain Liddell met his wife through rfc and was
married to her by then. If you were here, then you might remember

It's a loooooooooooong time ago, don't remember anyones names (except she

Let me make this simple. I hate potted meat. So, if I see a can of potted
meat and open it and taste it and complain, how much sense does that make?

It's the same way with newsgroups and threads. The subject says 'Palin does
this" of "Mc Cain does that" or "The liberals suck" or whatever.

Gee, I wonder what that is about. Let's open it and see.

Sheesh.

If you can't killfile, or at least use the little arrows on your keyboard,
load up your computer and take it to charity. You're too dumb to own it.

Ah, Friend, therein lies the rub, you see. The title of the Usenet
group is rec.food.cooking. From my past experience, upon which I was
relying quite heavily, I expected to find a good many posts about
food. I logged into it thinking I would find what I was searching for
(recipe and old friends) rather quickly.

My sentiment exactly. I found titles to posts I wouldn't dream of
opening even if you paid me good money. I paged through thread after
thread that belonged to newsgroups like rec.sex.nauseatingads or rec.i-
hate-non-whites.racism or rec.lick my.dick -- all full of wonderful
recipes or talk about food or really interesting OT stuff, I'm sure,
but I couldn't tell by the title. Nor was I tempted by the title to
investigate.

There's a second reason not to use googlegroups. There is no killfile
capability. If Steve is such a knowledgeable person about these things,
he should know that.

I didn't have a killfile for many, many years. I used my brain instead.
After practice, I got pretty good at figuring out what to look at and
what to skip. When I got a new Mac, my old newsreader was no longer
supported under the new OS. The author suggested upgrading to a
different version. It was still free, but came from a different place
(even though it was almost identical) and had more features, including a
killfile.

Here is a great "small batch" bread and butter pickle recipe I just
tried.... Very good!

Homemade Bread And Butter Pickles

Pickles

5 pickling cucumbers
4 slices fresh horseradish
4 sprigs fresh dill weed
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup sugar
3 cups water
4 cloves garlic, peeled
2 tablespoons pickling spice
2 teaspoons turmeric
salt & pepper
mason jars; sterilized by boil

Wash cucumbers, slice into 1/4-inch thick rounds, and place in a
heated,
sterilized mason jar with horseradish and fresh dill weed.

Set a large pot over medium heat and add vinegar, sugar, water, garlic
and
pickling spices. Bring the brine to a boil then pour over cucumbers
and
horseradish in still-hot mason jar and seal lid. Allow to cool to room
temperature before refrigerating. You can serve once chilled, but for
best
flavor serve after the pickles have been left overnight.

No, I'm Martha McLemore. Don't know anything about Death Metal. As I
told Keith in a private email a couple of minutes ago, I used to post
here beginning in 1995; last post was a couple of years ago.

Mostly just wanted to see if Barb and Nancy and some others I used to
'talk' to here were still around. And search for an apple cake recipe
I posted here I-can't-remember-when.

I noticed Sheldon is still here. How about Moosemeat?

No, I'm Martha McLemore. Don't know anything about Death Metal. As I
told Keith in a private email a couple of minutes ago, I used to post
here beginning in 1995; last post was a couple of years ago.

Mostly just wanted to see if Barb and Nancy and some others I used to
'talk' to here were still around. And search for an apple cake recipe
I posted here I-can't-remember-when.

I noticed Sheldon is still here. How about Moosemeat?

Piggybacking cuz I can't see Martha's posts. Here's an apple cake
recipe that I found who-knows-where maybe 10 years ago. Might be yours
I guess. :-) I haven't made it in a while; I might make one tomorrow to
take to church...

Apple Bundt Cake

2 C chopped apples
3 C all-purpose flour
1 C sour cream
1 tsp baking soda
1 C butter
2 tsp apple pie spice
3 C sugar
1/4 tsp salt
6 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp almond extract

Preheat oven to 350°. Have all ingredients at room temperature. Grease
and flour bundt or tube pan, set aside. Peel and chop apples, mix with
sour cream in a small bowl, set aside. Sift together flour, soda, salt,
and spices, set aside. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until
well blended. Add extracts, then eggs two at a time, blending well
after each addition. Starting and ending with dry ingredients, gently
blend in flour mixture and apples, 1/3 at a time. Use large spoon or
lowest speed to just combine. Bake in middle of oven about 75 minutes
until done. Let cool just a few minutes and turn out on rack. Cool
completely, then drizzle with a powdered-suger and milk glaze. If
desired, dust lightly with cocoa.

I had no problems with Martha Hughes. I think some people thought she
was a little dingy, but I always found her to be kind and generous. One
poster here, who is 100 times more obnoxious, came down on her pretty
hard. I have a suspicion why, but don't know for sure.

It sure has changed. Mostly it is all OT stuff and the only food topics is
when somebody posts about cooking and has their ass nailed to a wall for
committing an act of sacrilege against the food gods. But you can delight
in the posts where people describe the lunmch they ate at a restaurant or
that Jill is having fish sticks for dinner.
