What's the hole for? I assumed it wasn't for hanging the spatula on a
hook, or it would be at the other end - right?

It's the one I use most of the time. A woodworker acquaintance just
made another one for me. He made a four-tined wood fork for me a month
ago. He works cheap: a jar of jam and a small loaf of bread and we're
both happy.

I love a spatula or wooden spoon manufactured with a hole in it. I
can stir faster without the contents leaping out of the bowl, and it's
much more efficient. Especially good is a square bamboo one with
slits that;s fantastic for sautes and stir fry. 2 for a buck at the
dollar store.

It's wonderful for putting sauces together. The hole helps break up any
lumps quickly. I wouldn't be without mine.

It's to incorporate air into stirred food. My mom also found it helped
reduce air resistance when she was beating us with a wooden spoon.

(laughing) I'll never forget the one (and *only*) time I did babysitting
for some neighbor's kids around 1975. Their mother handed me a wooden spoon
on her way out the door and told me not to be afraid to hit them with it.
YIKES! Obviously this was in the days prior to a kid picking up the phone
to call CPS if you so much as raise your voice in their presence.

I had a similar experience. I babysat (1959) for a large family. The Mom
handed me a ping pong paddle and told me it was the baby bat. I didn't have
to use it. Just the threat was enough... My grandfather was a barber and
my Dad had his razor strop that was the threat in our house. It never got
used either. Just the threat of it was enough. Kids these days don't have
any fear of consequences for their actions....Sharon in Canada

My Dad also had a razor strop but he didn't hesitate to use it. One
day, shortly after it had been applied, I threw it in the cistern. Dad
quickly replaced it and applied it again.
