I love zoos. But I have to say, until oh, the last 15 years, the Memphis
Zoo put me off. I remember the too sad days of the old "Lion House", which
was nothing more than a cinder-block and cement enclosure with big cats in
cages. It made me sad to see them.

After the zoo renovation, however, they've adopted an open concept. "Cat
Country" is a spacious area lush with greenery, running brooks and places
for all the cats to run and play, or take naps in the shade or the sun, as
cats are wont to do. Separated, of course, so they don't kill each other
LOL

The old "Primate House" was similarly sad. Ugly cement enclosure with very
thick glass so you could look at some sad primates with a couple of fake
branches to swing on if they wanted to. They didn't want to. Now, they're
playing like crazy in a foliated area, ditto the water, lots of items of
intrigue to amuse them.

They're gradually getting this zoo up to snuff. Since I've seen it change
over the last 30 years the difference is amazing. I think they turned the
old Lion House into a cafe LOL

They have some work to do on some of the bird areas. There's one poor
lonely old bald eagle still in a big enclosure. Okay, the cage is about 3
storeys high but he's in there all by himself. If it's even the same eagle.
He just sits there, all by himself. (sigh)

Overall, it's a really good zoo now. Before, not so much.

I went to the San Diego zoo but that was in 1967. I barely remember it. I
do remember Sea World and Shamoo the Killer Whale (same time frame; how many
Shamoo's have their been?!). Went to the zoo in Bangkok on a school field
trip but I don't remember much about it.

Maybe it isn't the meerkats and gorillas.

ROFL!

I certainly hope someone taking me to the zoo on a first date isn't
expecting to "get lucky"! My ex and I went on our first date to the Memphis
zoo. Watching monkeys sling kaka, or almost being spit on by a camel (or
was it a dromedary? I don't recall) doesn't get me all hot and bothered.
I've no idea why any man would think it should!

Yes, the Cleveland Zoo.

We go to one or two sections each time we go and learn all we can about that
section. They also have a great play area. My 5 and 9 year old could tell
you more about animals than most adults I know.

It's a nice walk, we all get out of the house for a while and it's 'free'
well, membership kind of free We also visit smaller zoos in the area.
After school lets out this year we are going to have a zoo day at the
Pittsburgh (sp?) Zoo, it's about a 2.5 hr drive.

If you get a zoo membership there are often joint memberships w/ other zoos,
so you can get into other zoos for free.

Remember, if he's a Google Groper I wouldn't have seen him there.

(I can click off my GG filter, but since I'm evaluating this *feed* - see
sig - that blocks GG posts, I can't see his to know fershure that he's
a Groper.)

I walked right past it without interest. They're like penguins right
now and dinsaurs when Jurassic Park was hot -- so overhyped I pretty much
avoid them.

At zoo prices? Bottled water was $3.25 (I did not).

None that I know of. On the other hand, here's the dope on the Shamus.
The original Shamu died about 27 years ago.

<q wiki>

Shamu is the name of the first female orca ever captured, which was
supposed to be a companion for Namu.[1] The name Shamu means "friend of
Namu". Shamu is a Southern Resident orca who was likely born in 1961 and
captured in Puget Sound in 1965.[1] Shamu and Namu resided in the care of
Seattle Marine Aquarium, but both orcas experienced social conflicts.
Shamu was then obtained by SeaWorld San Diego on December 20, 1965. [1]
She performed in several shows and eventually died on August 23, 1971. Her
final year of performing in front of an audience was mired in controversy.
She was retired from performing after an incident caught on tape where she
attacked Annette Eckis, an employee of SeaWorld at the time, who was
supposed to ride her. [2]

Today, "Shamu," "Namu," and "Ramu" are trademarked stage names given to
all of the orcas residing within the SeaWorld parks.[3] The first Baby
Shamu is named Kalina. She is the first surviving orca born in captivity
on September 26, 1985.[3] Notably, ten orca calves had been born in
captivity before 1985, but five were stillborn and the others all died
within two months of their births.[3] Kalina's parents, Katina and
Winston, were bestowed the names Namu (Katina) and Ramu (Winston). The
stage name Grandbaby Shamu was given to Kalina's first calf, which was
born on February 2, 1993 - a male named Keet. The first Great Grandbaby
Shamu was Keet's first calf, born on December 21, 2004 - a female named
Kalia. The first ever calf to be born to captive-bred parents (Kayla and
Keet) is a female named Halyn, who was born on October 9, 2005.

Yeah, they really strech out. And accentuating that is how damned skinny
their legs are. Not much eatin' on a dik-dik drumstick. Go ahead, say it
out loud..."dik-dick drumstick". Isn't that fun?

Oh man, I saw some awesome diving penguins at the Memphis zoo. Must have
been 2 years ago that John and I went there. They were diving off this
little mountain into the water and chasing round and round, like fish! And
MAN were they fast! We laughed.

It had nothing to do with some stupid penguin movies or animatronics. These
were real birds. And they were having FUN! You could tell by looking at
them, they were having fun! Whee!

The Brookfield Zoo (Chicago), the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and the
Henry Doorly Zoo (Omaha) are my faves, in that order.

Whatever, I had fun. Cheaper than the Hollywood Bowl and Dorothy Chandler

I have always preceded trends. I smoked cigars before they became chic. I
wore bomber jackets before they were the latest and greatest. I liked
meerkats before they had their own TV show (RIP Flower).

If you're ever in Chicago during December, check out the Holiday Magic
display at Brookfield. You'll see the animals in a very different
way, see amazing lights, and be able to grab a snack or two <---(ob
food) and warm up.

I don't remember a class called earth science, but my health class was
taught by a woman named Shirley Swallow.

LOL! Earth Science was somewhat of an experimental class and I don't know
if it survived more than a couple of years. I can't honestly say I
remember a whole lot about it except that we seemed to have spent a lot of
time on meteorology and geology.

We haven't been to the Los Angeles Zoo in years. Not since the kids
grew up and moved out. We keep intending to go again, but since we
live in Los Angeles (the Valley) we figure it will always be there.
Got to get off my "computer" go again. Have they finished all the
remodeling?

We moved from Cleveland a couple of years after they complete the
Rainforest. We really loved that exhibit, but the entire zoo is really
quite wonderful.

I dunno. I didn't see anything large going on. But I also didn't cover
the whole place.

Yeah, there's such an offer here for the LA Zoo and whatever that marine
place is down in Long Beach.

You know what's funny, we go to museums in Manhattan on Sundays
precisely to *avoid* school kids. You can imagine, they have lots of
field days there. Better to go on the weekend. Definitely go to the zoo
during the week.

I went on a weekday when school was in session, but the sprog count made
it appear that all of the schools were having Zoo Day excursions. It
was a z...er...no, I won't say it.

I've lived in L.A. since 1981 and finally made it to the Natural History
Museum, which is right next to the Coloseum, last fall. Because my buddy
wanted to go see the spider house for Halloween. I've been to the other
nature museum over at the La Brea Tar Pits (The Tar Tar Pits) once, and to
the Museum of Art (nearby the tar pits) once.

We're in Chatsworth. A little longer drive to the zoo, but not bad on
the freeway after the morning rush hours.

Well, the last time we were at the Gene Autry Museum, about a year
ago, we could see the entire front of the Zoo was closed off and major
construction was going on. Guess that's all done now. Time to go to
the zoo.

Actually there are quite a few sharks in the Lisbon Aquarium in
Portugal (for the 98's Expo).
Two teenage girls (my daughter and that of my colleagues) tried to
teach me the sharks are friendly pets,
I think I've convinced them that those sharks are not that nice,
depending on their mood or humor.

BTW, also been to Toronto Zoo, Paris Zoo (still open ?), Guang-Zhou
Zoo and Beijing Zoo in China...
