Breyer's size again

There have been some discussions about the size of Breyer's ice cram when it
dropped to 1.75 quarts. The new size is 1.5 quarts. The package height is
the same L X W X D, but the base has a taper to it. In a couple of years
it will be available only by the tiny medicine vials.

Nah. Same size, just packed in really thick Stryofoam.

Not only has the size been reduced, so has the quality. It used to be
very good but now, if Breyers was the only ice cream available, I'd go
without.

Perhaps, they have been bought by the prime exponent of creative
filling: Kellogs!

I've never been a Breyer's fan, but I want to know why you think it's
so bad now. Are they adding things you can't pronounce these days?

Time to boycott it. I stopped buying Shredded Wheat about 6 months ago when they
changed the packaging format to make the 18 biscuit box look like the old 24
size and priced it the same as the 24 pack. I switched to Muffets, which are
almost identical in taste and texture, but much cheaper. I must not be the only
one because I noticed less shelf space for Shredded Wheat in the grocery stores,
and the price of Shredded Wheat has dropped.

They no longer have the "Pledge of Purity" and add some fillers.

They did start adding tara gum to control refreezing problems, but that
was some time ago. I haven't noticed any differences in flavor in quite
some time. The new package is annoying.

Unfortunately, there's not a really good alternate in the price class.
You can certainly make your own or buy the premiums, but otherwise the
competitors are just as bad or worse.

I've never been a Breyer's fan, even with its introductin to the market.
It has no perceived richness of mouth feel, and it melts too damned fast.

Nope, the Pledge is still there. I have one of the new 1.5 quart

I've also noticed too that more air is being incorporated into the ice
cream. I like ice cream to have a creamy texture, not an airy one.

Yeah, packaging games are fun. A Price Rite just opened up by me. I love
frosted mini-wheats and their store brand is actually quite passable. An
18oz. box is $1.69.

Compare that to the actual brand at close to $4 for an 18oz box. What
you'll find is the 18oz box of Price Rite store brand frosted mini
wheats is relatively flat, while the national brand is nice and puffy.

But that puffy doesn't give you any more shredded wheat, it's air.

So you actually get much less for more money. It's a no brainer.

Right. But the vanilla now has added ingredients, like gum. Remember when
they used to brag it was only cream, sugar, and vanilla? Can't do that any
more.

As for the "all natural", well so is some kitty litter.

Given what a trashy ice cream it is, that wouldn't be a bad thing at
all.

My 'Junket' rennet tablets now come in 8-tab packs instead of the 12-tab
packs of yore.Cost more too naturally.

As mentioned elsewhere, they started adding tara gum as a ice crystal
preventative. Complaints were made, but that boat sailed. The pledge is
still there, as they claim tara gum to be a natural ingredient.

I'm not happy, but it's still better than Edys or other price-point
competitors.

You are comparing unit price, not package price I hope? Some of the

The store brands are packaged by local dairys, could easily be Bryers.

I'm pretty certain that there's a Stewart's Shops in your town, they
have decent ice cream at very good prices (escpecially their flavors
of the week), and they have a large assortment of flavors... and they
still have full half gallons.

You may also be able to buy Perry's ice cream at your local
stupidmarkets, I think their products are far better than Breyer's.

Yeah, Blue Bell has two plants. Per their web site: The Broken Arrow area
includes: Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. The Sylacauga area
includes: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.

It's good stuff, I'll grant you that. I can't recall the price of that
"real half gallon" since I rarely buy ice cream. I do know it wasn't cheap.
But you can bet your bottom dollar if they expanded nationwide they'd have
to shrink the size, sacrifice on ingredients and up the price just like all
the others.

Great ice cream! Easily found in Oklahoma, Texas and "those parts."

http://www.bluebell.com/The_Little_C...l_Country.aspx

It comes in three "quality" levels -- the brown rim being the best.
Their natural vanilla bean rocks!

It average $5.69 at Homeland (store is actually under the Safeway
umbrella) but Homeland typically had it on sale; sometimes two for $5
or $7 and it didn't matter what quality level. Three for $9.99 was a
great bargain, but I never had that kind of room in my freezer.
Besides, do any of us really need that much temptation calling from

IIRC, Breyer's was the leader in shrinking the package to 1.75 quarts
and the other brands followed.

The gums were added to increase shelf stability (so they can sell stale
ice cream and the consumers will not be able to tell.) But it seems to
also have the happy side affect of letting them increase the amount of
air ("overrun") that they whip into the ice cream. Air is cheaper than
milk and cream and sugar, plus it weighs less which cuts down on
shipping costs. "It's a win win!" :barf: They even made up a fancy
marketing name for it, like it's a good thing, "Double Churned„¢".

I mostly buy whatever brand is cheapest now (usually Blue Bunny in the
square cartons when it is on sale), because they are all headed in that
direction, and I just don't buy much ice cream any more.

Blue Bell is still good stuff; I buy a half gallon whenever I'm in
Texas. Please don't let them ruin Blue Bell.

My recollection was that Edys went first, but it's been a while.

I haven't noticed much difference there. It's always been a
high-overrun product.

"Double Churn" is a term applied to their low-fat product.

It does? I haven't bought any ice cream since I started making my own about four
years ago. Before that, Bryer's All Natural was one of the few brands of ice cream
that I bought, the rest being premium brands like Hagen Daaz.

It does I'm afraid. It certainly doesn't compare to Blue Bell, nor other
more local stuff like Braum's. Of course it's always difficult to beat
home made, but the convenience factor does come into play.

For the most part, but I still love Klondike bars, especially the
Heath Bar variety.

Someone else that knows about Braum's!!!! I lived a hop-skip-jump from
the dairy.

Personally, I prefer the Blue Bell ice cream over Braum's, but I love
their malts and burgers!

Bob got to try his first Braum's burger when he moved me west. There
was a hellacious thunderstorm going on as we traveled I-40 west at
Weatherford, OK. We had to exit and made the best of at a Braum's. I
think he liked it. It certainly was fitting as my "last meal" leaving
Oklahoma.

Neither is available here. Breyers is still the best commercial brand
around here aside from BJ or H daz.

Stewart's does not show CT at all. Perry's does show they have
distribution in New England, but no specifics. I'll have to check out some
other stores as the chains here don't carry it.
