There is no pan-(East)Indian food and the very idea of such would be preposterous. There are many ethnicities, regions, religions, and climatic conditions on the huge subcontinent. Often, there is little that binds together many of them, foodwise and otherwise. In fact, lacking a common language, many people there - most actually - cannot even communicate with those from other regions. Now the Guyanese part of the (East) Indian diaspora has been originally nearly as diverse, I take it. Besides, there are of course also people from other places, such as Africa, for example, and then there are the indigenous American Indians. Regional Indian (whether East or West) foods may have about as much or as little in common with each other as they have with some African foods. It appears unlikely that all or most of each of those relatively small groups of people in that relatively small country have been living in ghettos and clinging tenaciously to their own kind and their own customs for decades and centuries. So, mixing and blending, as well as perhaps a development of something more-or-less new and different, must have been naturally occurring. Victor |
