I screwed up with the shopping this weekend. We often roast a chicken on
Sundays, either a small one for a good feed for two or a large one to have a good feed and leftovers. This week I bough a small one. I was quite happy to hear my wife offer to look after dinner tonight, but was puzzled when she said she could not find the chicken. I went to look in the fridge, in the fridge freezer and in the chest freezer. No chicken. I was sure that I had bought one. I usually put the groceries in the back seat, but I remembered that this week I had put them in the trunk. So I went out to the car and checked the trunk. That's where my chicken was. If this had happened a week ago it would not have been a problem, but Spring arrived this weekend, and the chicken had been in the trunk of the car for two warm days. The bird had cost me $6.15, and it didn't take much to convince me that it was not worth risking. |

If it makes you feel any better, many people here have done something similar. Hopefully either you have a plan B or your grocery store is open on Sundays! Somehow, the package in a plastic grocery sack by itself was inadvertantly left in the trunk for a few days during warm weather and even the flies had started colonizations for a generation or few! Yuck-factor to the n-th degree! It took awhile for the flies to finally clear out. Thankfully, we no longer have that car. Sky -- Ultra Ultimate Kitchen Rule - Use the Timer! TN so you can imagine how hot the trunk of the car was... and it was in there for two days. Ugh! Febreeze on the liner of the trunk, a spray of some inexpensive no-name "air freshener" and an airing out and all was well. Jill |

My wife had the honour of transferring it to a bag suitable for the green garbage collection. She said it was pretty ripe smelling. If it had happened last weekend I I would have had no hesitation eating it because temperatures never rose above 40 F, but the last 2 days have been in the 50's -60s, and who knows how much warmer it gets in the trunk of the car. OK.... this was one of those occasions where we had to run out to the grocery store on Sunday. Had it not been open we would have gone to a restaurant. |

I unloaded the groceries and put everything away in the fridge and then realised I hadn't seen it - I checked the docket and yep, I HAD bought it... so I went down to the car and rummaged around and found the bag fallen under the seat. Good thing that I retrieved it too, because it had my carton of milk in it too - I'd hate to think what a mess THAT might have made if it had stayed in the warm car a few days! (not to mention the enormous cost of fresh orange juice and lacataid-brand milk nowadays... we couldn't afford to waste them!) |
