Google Groups and Gmail Accounts

After some "soul searching" I finally decided to filter both Google Groups
and Gmail Accounts. With the volume of spam and generally unwanted posts in
rfc and other newsgroups, it has become just too unwieldly to ignore or
bypass posts from either.

I apologize to those posters to rfc who legimately post using Gmail. I had
been posting listing a Gmail account, but several folks here asked that I
change it to something else so that they would miss my posts. I did so a
while back. Probably not a bad idea for others.

I've just done the same. And to think I hesitated.
Spam has just gotten out of control.

Add yahoo.com.cn to that list, as well.

G'day Wayne!
I've stopped reading/posting to rfc because of the spam and ofttimes
ugly postings.
One day it might return to on topic and polite discussions about food
and cooking......not holding my breath.
Kind regards though to you and the other ' goodguys'.
(I'm busy quilting, travelling and appreciating life, friends and
cats!)

Now how are you going to keep up on the latest fashions?

I hear "juicy tracksuits" are in at the moment (Whatever the hell
those are).

ObFood: Peanut butter cookies and milk.

8 of the last 16 spams came from people using gmail return
addresses. All but 1 came from Google. None of the spam actually
comes from gmail since you can't post to Usenet from gmail.

You must be new here. This has been the topic of discussion in at
least 5 major threads this month.

I smell a Fox and Grapes.

If you use a real news server like aioe.org, and a decent news
client, then you won't have to read all this spam through your
current Google and your attitude might change.

The most pointless and boring threads ever, I say. Announcing this sort of
thing is like announcing a visit to the bathroom. Nobody cares. Or maybe
just, I don't care.

I killfile spam posts by email address, individually. It is as satisfying as
weeding the garden can be.

Anyone too pussified to do this needs to have a much more limited discussion
arena than Usenet.

I glace at them half-heartedly, but it really is the same thing in
every thread: Same info and a bunch of people arguing the difference
between gmail and Google groups (which I admit I used to try and
explain with gusto, but not any more).

Bronwyn, it was so nice to hear from you. I've thought of you often and
wondered what you've been up to. It's a shame that some of the "goings
on" in rfc have caused some of the good and long time posters to leave the
group, but I do understand. It seems to be somewhat cyclical, though, so
you might pop back in again from time to time to check on the
"temperature" around here. I'm glad to know that you're busy with things
that you enjoy, Life is too precious to squander it on things that you
dont.

Best wishes,
Wayne

This time I do. When I made the dough and baked one pan's worth

The whole killfiling thing amuses me to no end. Oh I've employed them at
various points, and use Gravity's rule sets to get rid of the likes of
"Dr." Andrew Chung and the like.

I remember when I owned cdp.org, my host name was garlic.cdp.org and I
got a UUCP feed from a friends system using Waffle on a DOS box. I had
quite the killfile on that one.

Yeah, when I added it to my rule set I noticed I'd click on a group with
say 100 message headers waiting do download. Then once it got all the
headers there'd only be 4 messages.

And absolutely certainly impossible for some others. I used Google Groups
for months because my ISP does not offer email addresses/accounts nor news.
Until I could get U of Berlin to accept a payment mode I had no choice.

I agree that the spam is irritating, but what I think is that if you are
going to put everyone using those various addresses and services on ignore
you should just do it and not announce it. Announcing it does nothing but
increase the frustration for those helpless to change. And frankly the
advice each of you tacks on the end of the announcement is a bit clueless
and superior sounding.

Yes, you did. There are good, free servers. Payment mode is not an
issue with free servers.

I tried one and it was so irregular that it sometimes took 5 days for a post
to appear. I never even saw 20% of the posts of others. That was tera
news, which I see some here use. Google was 150% better than that.

The first 6 are redundant with #7.

I bet that's true. You strike me as the type who "stikes out" at
people you do know just because you can.

Or, when you come on to read, in OE, right click a
post and choose "block sender." There tends to be
two, maybe three email addresses a day, tops. So I
do six clicks, no spam for the rest of the day.

Yeah, I know, OE thucks and all that, but I like having my
mail and news together. It works for me. (I have tried T-bird,
Free Agent, Gravity and some others. Of them, I liked Gravity
but not as much as OE.

Yes, particularly when you have a genius like Wayne going out of his
way to address me when I am not even posting to him, to TELL ME
he has me killfiled. Pfft. If he's going to read and respond to my post,
wtf is the point? lol

Spending a lot of time talking about the various ways to arrange it so that
one does not even SEE spam in a group always makes people sound so ..
*precious* to me. :) "Please, you must help me, these advertisements
injure my delicate sensibilities so, I cannot bear to actually sense their
presence, let alone DELETE them!" hahaha! People kill me.
