Blocking Gmail

Gmail spammers have so loaded down usenet with junk spam that I've decided
to block the domain. There are several of you that I really enjoy reading,
like Om and HeyBub, who use Gmail and whose posts I will miss (guys, please
switch).

Hotmail and Yahoo have very few spam originators compared to Gmail. The
sheer volume of Gmail spammers have just become too unwieldy to block on an
individual basis.

Please note that I've cross-posted this message, so please remove other
groups before replying.

I don't see much spam here. I guess my filters work.

I never noted before that you used "gstringmail.com".

That's clever. ;-)

But several newsreaders, including Outlook Express, allow you to
specifically accept people. It is only necessary that the rule
precede the dissallowing of gmail.

Here is the rule (abbreviated) that I use on OE6 but I don't
know if it will work on Windows Mail.

But I don't want to filter @gmail.com. I want anything with
googlegroups.com in the message header. People posting from Google Groups
don't have to have a gmail address. I was posting via Google before I
bought this PC last week and I don't have a gmail account.

Thunderbird? That had one of the weakest filtering systems of any of
the newsreaders I reviewed back when I was selecting one. Unless
they've made some major improvements, of course.

No, they haven't really improved it yet.

I'm using Thunderbird with a freeware local proxy server called
"nfilter" or "newsproxy" (the same program has 2 names and I'm not sure
which is proper) to do the filtering.

Agreed. They haven't. The fix:

Also works for the MS news clients.

I'd looked into some of the proxy systems back when. However, XanaNews
seemed to cover most of what I needed (the upgrade for me was filtering
cross-postings). I've been reasonably satisfied since.

Two different issues. I don't want to filter GG users. The spam is with

Tons and *tons* of clued people use gmail and show gmail email addresses,

Then why has my downloaded spam count gone down on this NG by at least 80%
since I have filtered for @gmail.com in the last 24 hours? It hasn't removed
it all, but at least now I can easily pick out the posts from the spam.

Because many GG spammers do use gmail accounts. Nothing I said is in
conflict with that. Yes, you've set off a car bomb at the mall and hit
*some* of the GG spammers. And non-GG spammer bystanders who use gmail.
Collateral damage, as they say. Targeting GG spammers, not gmail users,
gets *all* of the GG spammers. And none of the many innocent gmail users.
Because, see, you're actually filtering *on* GG. If you're happy with an
80% improvement (and don't mind all of the friendly-fire kills you'll make
on non-GG-spammer gmail users), go for it. Just don't think your car bomb
at the market is the sniper rifle that real GG filtering is.

But you keep referring to it as if it makes a difference to me. Whether
these are GG users, Gmail users or spammers who fake gmail.com doesn't
matter one wit, the result is the same.

I don't mind a bit. It puzzles me as to why what I do matters to you. Do
what you want, I'll do what I find the most expediant.

So what? I've accomplished what I wanted to accomplish.

Dave, I've had excellent results by blocking gmail, too.
Luckily I can exclude the posters I want to see from that
rule as I find out who they are.

Blocking gmail does a fine job of cleaning up the spammers, etc.

I agree 1000%. I've already excluded a few gmail users whom I know use
gmail. The fact also exists that some of the heaviest spammers don't use GG
at all, but will insert a fake @gmail.com address to throw other filters. A
GG filter won't touch those.

Unfortunately, no. Some people find that it is just easier to block
posters who put "gmail" in the "from" field.

I find these mildly offensive. It's like the retail merchant who says
that it is too much work to find out who steals from his store, so he
just doesn't serve customers with dark skin. Says it works great.

Dave mentions people who "use" gmail, but if you look at the bottom of
some posts from people who put "gmail" in the "from" field, they freely
admit that they don't use the account at all, it is just there because
it is required (and must be valid) to use their news service. The
spammers who harvest Email from the "from" field can harvest all they
want, those people never read mail from those Email accounts.

Thanks, Dan... You summed it up nicely. And, in my case, I can't use

A partially effective, sloppy filter. And you're welcome to it.

It does a half-ass job. But as I look at your headers and Dave's, I see
that this is kind of moot, because your news clients can't - by themselves
- do the kind of precise filtering it takes to do it right, as some more
robust readers can.

You're saying I'm seeing spam I don't want to see. In fact, it's only
a couple messages a day, *maybe*. Blocking gmail.com is very effective.
I can't imagine what posts you're seeing that you think I'm not filtering.

The point is moot. I'm happy, no worries.

It's not the same as all. And what's offensive is to try and insert a racial
analogy. WebTV is a much better analogy.

I made a large point of that several times.

But the effect is the same as if they were really from gmail. Gmail users
can easily munge their address, but more and more folks are blocking gmail
period, rather than waste huge chunks of time.

I don't need to do precise filtering to effectually drop the spam to
acceptable thresholds for me.

Allow me to respond to a question you had in another post, simply because
I happen to be here and don't want to bother looking for that one. You
asked why I seemed to care that you were using your partial filter instead
of the more comprehensive one. My answer is that, mostly, I like to keep
the better way in front of other users who might wish to adopt filtering,
so that if they do set up something of their own they'll know how to do it
right. It's kind of like the urban legend site http://snopes.com -- their
objective is to sort out the legends that have a basis in fact and the
legends that are pure fabrication; mine, on Usenet itself and via the UIP
(see sig), is to advocate the best filtering methods for the GG problem,
both to harden clients against GG posters and to avoid collateral damage.

Blinky out, re this thread.

Repeat: out. Happy cooking.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I use commercial Agent for newsgroups
and had even sent a query to their help desk on how to filter the
gmail domain. Their answer was complicated and less than useful,
essentially saying I couldn't. Not a computer guru (just a legal one),
but after reading your post I did Ctrl+K and entered @gmail.com and
all the gmail posts were marked. Bingo.

I could care less about 'collateral damage' or the fact that you percieve
yourself as a filtering guru. My way is fast and efficient.
