Today I made Butternut Squash ( thank you Jill ) It of course was
deliocious, and super easey, the most difficult part is cutting up to
squash to bake! Nearly wrestled it to the ground before I got it
cut.

Is there a Really Easy way to do this? I generally take a big knife,
pierce the squash and then draw the knife down, much more difficult
than that sounds.

I do half at a time, start from the middle and out, then turn
it around and do the other half. I also do that on the table,
not the countertop, so it's easier to push down.

Don't know if that helps at all, I don't have a trick. But, I will
be making that soup soon as my (very pregnant with twins) sil
just loves the stuff.

I get it started with one hand to get the knife level, than grab with both
hands to steady the knife and put my weight in it. If you get your upper
body over the knife and push down, easy as pie.

I may end up with a bloody mess some day but it has worked so far :-)

Lucky you has a husband. LOL

I don't have a husband so I need to slice my own winter squash. With
butternut I sever the small portion from the large portion at the
neck. Then by placing those parts cut side down it's easy to slice
each part in half, scoop out the seeds, and slice into smaller
portions

Acorn squash is a bit more difficult, with all those ridges it's more
difficult to find a balancing point.

Anyway, I prefer to slowly grill winter squash to imbue it with smoke
flavor and to dry it out some... eat as is like fat free smoked
gouda... or make a smokey flavored soup/

Tough things huh.

It is tough and potentially dangerous.

I've tried a hacksaw but that really wasn't cutting it so a few good
smacks to the concrete works well
if your not making some presentation. Just broken pieces of squash

Go buy a cleaver.
My favorite knife. I use it for a LOT of things.
It holds a good enough edge to do _that_ to tomatoes:

Then there are those that keep clean, sharp kitchen hatchets! <g>

Wow , what a variety of ways to hack up a squash! Thank you all very
much, I will probably try them all one at a time of course.

You're welcome and...

Yes, it's hard to cut. I use my cleaver and give it a good whack (that's a
technical term, heheh) then sort of rock it back and forth on the cutting
board to slice it through. Make sure you whack the stem off first, if there
is one. Glad you enjoyed the soup!
