If anyone is ever in Nova Scotia, a few food places to suggest that I have
found in the last year since moving here. Visit That Dutch Man's Farm for cheese. Specificly I like his Dragons Breath blue, though Gouda is his specialty. Aside from "the farm", you can buy his stuff at the Halifax market Saturday mornings (and meet the "dutchman" himself) and Pete's Frootique too, though Pete's marks up the price alot. http://www.thatdutchmansfarm.com/ --- Foxhill Cheese House. They make alot of chedders and havarti. I like their jalapeno blends and their pepper jellies. I think, though not sure, that they are also at the Saturday Halifax market and Pete's. http://www.foxhillcheesehouse.com/ --- Pete's Frootqiue, a couple locations in Halifax. The website does not do this place justice. Their selection of gourmet foods is awesome. If you visit on the weekend they will have live piano and sometimes others to play while you shop. The produce, meats, cheeses and other selections will make you drool. This place is a *must* for any foodie out this way. http://www.petesfrootique.com/ --- Hall's Harbour Lobster Pound. The lobster are market value plus 2 or 3 bucks to boil it. You can sit your butt right on the patio overlooking the Bay of Fundy while you eat. If you are on a bit of a budget, their fish and chips are the best I've had. Get it fried with batter (it's not heavy at all, trust me), do not the sauted version. They do pan seered scallops (don't get the breaded scallops) as another tastey option. http://www.hallsharbourlobster.ns.ca/ --- In Halifax itself. There is the Hamachi, which have a steak house and a japanese house in different locations. Both are top notch. "The great wall" for chinese in the downtown area, Tug's Pub for all you can eat mussels with various sauces to change it up and a full course menu that is pretty decent. http://www.hamachihouse.com/ http://thegreatwall.ca/ http://www.rcr.ca/tugs_pub_welcome.html |

We spent a night in Halifax during a driving trip around Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and picked a restaurant out of the phonebook. It was The Five Fisherman. The best seafood we've ever had! Plus , they served Keiths's Ale, which we've never found here in the US. It was within walking distance of our hotel and the waterfront, and a really cool old cemetary. I'd love to go back there again. Halifax is a beautiful city. |

Halifax is a beautiful city. You were literaly 3 minute walk to the Keiths Brewery, which is where the Saturday farmers market is. The Five Fisherman is great, but depending on what you get, you need to dip deep into the wallet. It should have been on my list though! http://www.fivefishermen.com/main.html The cemetary is the one on Barrington St I think. It was used from approx 1750 to 1850. I was just in there the other day for the first time having a look. |

I was pregnant at the time and despite being a beer aficionado, I only had a few sips of Keith's! :-( The Five Fisherman was rather pricey, but the food and service was awesome, it was as if we were the only patrons in the establishment. The waiter said something abut it being haunted too, because it was a convent school at one time? We only had one night in Halifax, which is regretful, but it's a good reason to plan another trip there. |
